Fitou is a large red wine appellation at the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region in southern France. Encompassed entirely by Corbieres, Fitou produces a similar style of wine to this much larger appellation, being full-bodied, sometimes herbaceous red wines.
The dominant vine variety in Fitou is Carignan, which must constitute 40% of any blend, and is often blended with Grenache, Lladoner Pelut, Mourvedre and Syrah. Syrah is the favored blending partner for Carignan in the higher, hillier areas of the appellation’s catchment area, while Mourvedre is the preferred secondary variety in those areas closer to the sea. The climate for all Fitou vineyards is distinctly Mediterranean.
The distinction between the eastern and western halves of Fitou is quite pronounced, and is demonstrated in more than just their chosen encepagement. The two long, thin halves (or ‘fingers’ as they are often called) of the appellation are separated by an area occupied by the Corbieres appellation. The reason for this separation is entirely political, rather than geographical, and dates back to the mid-twentieth century, when the appellation was created. The western half benefits from the increased altitude (up to 1650ft/500m) and the schist soils which its mountainous landscape offers, bringing increased sunshine levels and improved drainage. The eastern half has higher levels of limestone and clay in its soils, and slightly higher, more consistent temperatures as the result of its lower-lying coastal position. Traditionally the wines from the west are the more widely respected of Fitou’s output.
The vineyards which produce the herb-scented, dry red wines of Fitou also produce sweet white wines under the Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes appellations.
