Fire Prevention Month

Today marks the start of the yearly observation of the Fire Prevention Month. Many are of the impression that it’s just an annual activity of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and a mere compliance to one of their office’s mandate.
***
Fire prevention, like crime prevention, is everybody’s concern. Who would want to be victimized by fire anyway? Thus, the awareness of it needed to be instilled to everyone. While it is the duty of the BFP to protect us from fires, it is likewise our duty as citizens to do so. We need not learn how to operate fire trucks or how to aim fire hoses’ nozzles but we just need to be aware how to prevent unwanted fires in our surroundings.
***
So what’s new with our fire protection agencies, fire protection practices and the level of awareness among us on how to avoid fires and how to stop its spread in case of incidence? Are we safer now and more aware than that of last year’s observation?
***
The BFP, the country’s lead agency in fighting fires, admits that it still lacks the manpower complement; it still lacks fire-fighting equipment, tools and gadgets as required by world standards. As a matter of fact, there are municipalities that have no fire truck to use until today, this despite the presence of firemen on their sides.
***
On some localities, their fire trucks are dilapidated due to their old age and over-use. There are some who still use the old model Roughneck Fire Trucks because the BFP or the local government unit cannot purchase newer, faster and more reliable ones. There are larger municipalities, on the other hand, that have only one fire truck despite their need for at least three due to size and terrain of their areas.
***
There are still municipal fire stations that have the necessary basic facilities for our firemen such as comfortable quarters, decent offices, fire suits and boots and other things necessary for our firemen’s safety. No wonder, even the number of our firemen is getting slimmer as many are forced to look for greener pastures abroad.
***
Some fire stations merely rely on the mercy of the local government unit where they belong for some of their operational expenses since their budget allocations from its national office are not enough for their operations. There are reported incidents in the past where some fire trucks have no fuel; that their time to respond to a fire incident became a disaster.
***
Some of our firemen also lack proper training or updating of their firefighting skills for them to be kept abreast on what’s the latest in containing fires. Firefighters have to hone their skills from time to time in order to keep them always on the go in cases of fire alarms.
***
Grass fires are prevalent among our major expressways such as the North and South Luzon Expressways and along the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway. During summer, wild grasses along the said highways dry up thus making such vulnerable to getting ignited by lighted cigarette butts. Some motorists cannot just learn from fire incidents along expressways that pose danger to motorists who are blinded by smoke from fires.
***
Grass fires likewise contribute to the degradation of the environment as the heat generated from it contributes a little to the warming of the globe. The smoke coming from grassfires adds up to the toxic gases that envelop the earth. During this time of the year, the expressways’ managements should be with the BFP in the observance of the Fire Prevention Month. At toll gates entrances, motorists should be reminded of not throwing lighted cigarette butts along the expressways.
