‘Falcon’ destroys P4-M worth of crops

Monday, June 27, 2011
GUAGUA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Sunday reported that Tropical Storm Falcon left P4,241,290 worth of damages to rice crops in Central Luzon with at least 895 farmers affected by the flooding in different areas of the region.
The DA said that as of June 24, some 9.14 metric tons of rice have been damaged with 1083.2 hectares of palay (rice grains) having been classified as totally damaged.
DA regional director Andrew Villacorta told Sun.Star Pampanga that the figures on the damages could still go up as reports from different municipal and provincial agricultural offices are still consolidating statistics and registering areas that have been affected by flooding.
Villacorta said that most of the palay affected by the flooding are newly planted. He said that the farmers may still replant and catch up on the wet cropping season.
“We are still monitoring the situation as there are still areas that we have yet to receive full reports,” Villacorta said, adding that the DA is doing all it can to help those affected by the typhoon.
The latest report from the DA on the rice crop damages so far include Guagua town in Pampanga, Tarlac City in Tarlac province and the areas of Subic, Castillejos, San Marcelino, San Antonio, San Narciso, San Felipe, Cabangan, Botolan, Iba, Palaguig, Masinloc, Candelaria and Sta. Cruz in Zambales town.
