DOST launches dengue alert website
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Department of Science and Technology 3 (DOST-3) has formally launched the Dengue Vector Surveillance website for monitoring of weekly reports on dengue.
Designated school coordinators, who used to do their weekly reports manually by tediously filling up forms, can just text their reports which are then automatically encoded to the website.
This development is expected to help curb dengue cases even more as it will make it easier to monitor possible dengue sites and recommend interventions to local government units.
Each school will register to the website by indicating its own unique school ID to be able to submit updated data.
Belen Q. Garcia, DOST-3 Assistant Regional Director for finance and administrative services and regional focal person for the project, said the agency is hopeful that, with the new system, weekly reports will now be regularly sent by the schools so that a more updated situationer is available at any given time which may help local government units and other concerned sectors implement measures to pre-empt a full blown dengue outbreak in their localities.
The site carries information not only on mosquito population nationwide but dengue incidence and other mosquito-related facts as well.
Vector refers to an organism, in this case the Aedes aegypti mosquito, that carries the disease-causing dengue virus from one host to another.
Developed by DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), the dengue alert website features a map with red and white balloons. Red balloons indicate “alert” which means that the population density of dengue-carrying mosquitoes in a certain area is too high which means interventions are needed to be put in place promptly.
Meanwhile, white balloons-dotted areas mean that the population of the dengue-carrying mosquito is too sparse, or none at all, to cause any dengue incident.
In June last year, the DOST distributed mosquito ovicidal/larvicidal trap (O/L trap) in 3,350 schools in the region to control the population of dengue-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
A designated school coordinator back then submitted monitoring reports to the DOST via email. But schools without internet connection had difficulty with the set-up, prompting DOST to launch text monitoring.
DOST developed the monitoring map project in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Health, and Department of Interior and Local Government and LGUs. The public can access the site at http://oltrap.pchrd.dost.gov.ph.
The launching of the site was attended by the schools division superintendents of DepEd in Central Luzon.
