Dong to field more lawyers on Election Day
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Third district Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. will be deploying more lawyers in the field in his district in the Election Day on May 13, his chief of staff said.
Ramon Navarra Jr., Gonzales’ chief of staff, said in a statement that he did not reveal exactly how many lawyers the congressman would deploy but said the numbers would be more than enough to meet any legal problem that may arise.
The 46-year-old Gonzales is seeking his last term as congressman of the district against City Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez who had also held the post prior to his nine-year term as mayor of this city. Rodriguez was beaten in 1992 to then former Immigration Commissioner Andrea “Didi” Domingo.
Gonzales won the seat in 2004.
Navarra said the high-powered legal team is drawn from select reputable firms in Manila with solid track record in election.
He said that Gonzales wants to serve notice that he will be in the political battle every single step of the way,” Navarra said.
“It’s all in the highest interest of honest and clean election that we are putting up that legal team because we want to ensure that our congressman is not cheated of his impending victory and that the people’s will is not thwarted by machinations and manipulations by unscrupulous individuals, politicians or not,” Navarra said.
Asked if there are indications of possible cheating in the coming elections, Navarra said: That has always been and will always be a top concern in any election.”
Gonzales is running under the Nationalist Party Coalition while Rodriguez is under the Liberal Party. Both parties have forged an alliance which, some party members assail, is more honored in the breach.
Navarra also noted that Gonzales had been the object of dirty propaganda campaigns such as spraying his tarpaulins with black paint or crossing his name or picture with black paint. Last Good Friday, life-size effigies of Gonzales with ropes tied around his neck and his tongue hanging out were displayed in this city.
Prior to these, Gonzales’s also received a death threat through his former security aide who found five live Armalite bullets and a paper bearing Dong’s name written in black at the gate of his house.
“Those are clear handwriting on the walls that undoubtedly show what Gonzales’ opponents and detractors are capable of doing and cheating could be part of their modus operandi,” Navarra said.
