Critics invited to celebrate Aquino’s first year in office

Wednesday, June 29, 2011
ADMINISTRATION allies and critics are all invited to celebrate with President Benigno Aquino III in his first year in office on Thursday, a Malacañang official said.
To mark his one year as President, Aquino on Thursday will lead the launch of a nationwide volunteerism program called “Pilipinas Natin (Our Philippines) and the presentation of the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) for 2011-2016.
Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma said the event will be inclusive as Malacañang even invited the Lakas-Kampi-CMD, the political party of Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“The theme of the event is inclusive growth…All sectors that wanted to join and to contribute in the administration’s aim for nation-building would be welcome,” Coloma said.
However, he declined to divulge the list of parties who will attend the event and said the groups that wanted to stage rallies will not be dispersed.
The volunteer program will gather at least 8,000 youth leaders and multi-sectoral volunteers who will be reaffirming their commitment and support to the Aquino administration, he added.
The event will be held at the Philippine Sports Arena (formerly Ultra) starting 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday.
Coloma said Malacañang has earmarked more than P5 million pesos for the occasion, which has been organized by the Office of Special Concerns of the PCOO headed by Undersecretary Mari Oquinena.
He said that the event will just be one of the several events lined-up prior to the President’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) on July 25.
While the event is open to the public, Coloma said seats will be limited depending on the arena’s capacity.
“We do not want another ‘Wowowee’ stampede to happen,” he said referring to the tragedy that happened during ABS-CBN’s defunct show “Wowowee” anniversary in 2006 where more than 70 people were killed.
The event will be aired on national television so that the public will be able to witness it.
The President is also set to present the Philippine Development Plan, which is based on his social contract with the Filipino people that served as his campaign platform. Aquino reaffirmed his commitment to the same plan during his inaugural a year ago.
Coloma refused to detail the President’s speech, which he is scheduled to deliver at 4 p.m., saying that it will focus on the “significant changes” that took place in the past 12 months.
Starting next week, members of the five Cabinet clusters will present their accomplishments to the President in preparation for his State of the Nation Address (Sona).
All details will be listed in the Sona Technical Report where the President will refer to for his Sona speech.
The five Cabinet clusters include Economic Development headed by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Human Development and Poverty Reduction cluster headed by Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, Security, Justice and Peace cluster headed by Executive Secretary Ochoa; Climate Change and Environment cluster headed by Secretary Ramon Paje and Good Governance and Anti-Corruption cluster headed by President Aquino.
Also highlighting the event is the signing of a memorandum of agreement to build 1,000 classrooms involving the Department of Education, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., and Gawad Kalinga.
On the morning of June 30, President Aquino will sign into law the proposed measure, which seeks to reset the August 8 election in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) to May 2013.
This measure also gives power to the President to appoint officers-in-charge in the Armm government to implement reforms until new officials are elected in the national mid-term elections in May. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
