Cops kill robbery suspect in Bulacan shootout
CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A member of a notorious highway robbery gang was killed in an encounter with policemen in Barangay San Gabriel, Santa Maria, Bulacan late Monday night.
In his report to Chief Supt. Edgardo T. Ladao, Bulacan police director Senior Supt. Joel Orduna identified the slain suspect as Christopher Garcia.
Orduna said they were able to establish the identity of the suspect through the rogue’s gallery of Santa Maria police.
He said the suspect was one of the armed men who robbed spouses Gil Susana Nieto, both residents of Barangay Camangyanan, Santa Maria town.
According to Orduna the couple was traversing the barangay road in Camangyanan at about 7:30 p.m. when the suspects on board two motorcycles blocked their path.
At gunpoint the suspects then took the couples’ money, jewelry and cellphones before fleeing towards Barangay Santa Rosa 11, Marilao, Bulacan.
Immediately the couple reported the incident to the police. A flash alarms regarding the robbery were sent to all police units in the province.
Several minutes later, policemen manning a Comelec checkpoint in Barangay San Gabriel noticed a man approaching on board a motorcycle having the same description of the suspects in the robbery.
The lawmen flagged down the suspect’s motorcycle but instead of slowing down he accelerated to escape.
Police gave a brief chased aboard a patrol car and cornered the suspect at the diversion road in the said area.
Sensing danger the suspect fired at the chasing cops who immediately returned fire killing him on the spot.
Orduna said the slain suspect reportedly belonged to a group of robbers who are notorious in victimizing motorists plying the area since last year.
Police recovered from the suspect a cal. 38 revolver with bullets, undetermined amount of cash money and an unlicensed motorcycle. ● Froilan E. Magtoto and Rudy Abular
