CIA awaits millionth passenger for 2012

CLARK FREEPORT — The Clark International Airport Corp (CIAC) said yesterday it expected anytime this week this year’s one millionth passenger to land at the Clark International Airport (CIA) here.

This is the first time that the CIA would have its millionth passenger within the same year. In the past, the airport marked one million passengers in three to four years since it was established in 1992.

This, amid rising lament over the alleged “misinformation” of Pres. Aquino on prospects of the CIA as the country’s site for the country’s premiere airport.

During his recent visit to Pampanga, Aquino admitted that all projects for the airport have remained on hold amid the lack of a fast and modern railway to connect it to Metro Manila.

The President also noted that Clark was about 80 kilometers from the metropolis amid the usual requirement of only 40 kilometers between the capital and the main airport.

“The President may have been misinformed, blindsided by vested interest groups,” said the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM).

“After a careful assessment of the statements of the President vis-à-vis some other reports on the CIA and other airports, we have come to the conclusion that the he is indeed misinformed,” said PGKM chair Ruperto Cruz.

Cruz noted that “it takes but 45 minutes to travel over 60-kilometers from Balintawak to Clark, but it takes some two hours to traverse the some 20-kilometer distance from Balintawak to the Ninoy Aquino International airport (NAIA).”

“We are also talking here not only of Pampanga and the rest of the central plains but of the Ilocos, Cagayan and Cordillera regions who will be greatly benefited by the CIA in full blast,” Cruz said.

Cruz said “the non-development of Clark is lost opportunity to these regions and the perpetuation of imperial Manila, no matter the congestion, pollution and urban blight attendant to it.”

Meanwhile, CIAC president Victor Jose Luciano expressed elation over prospects of the CIA welcoming its millionth passenger this week for the year 2012 alone.

“This is another milestone for the CIA as we have achieved for the first time an unprecedented one million passengers in one year. In fact, with the arrival of the millionth passenger, the figure is achieved in just 10 months, even before the year ends,” said Luciano.

It is the first time the Clark International Airport will post an annual passenger volume of 1 million. The first million was achieved in June 2007 after four years of operations by commercial airlines, led by South Korea’s Asiana Airlines that started in 2003.

The one-millionth passenger in 2007 was Korean national Lee Eun Hee, a 35-year-old computer programmer who arrived at the Clark airport aboard an Asiana Airlines flight from Incheon, South Korea.

Luciano said the CIA is expected to process no less than 1.4 million in 2012.

Budget carriers operating here include Air Asia Philippines, Air Asia Berhad of Malaysia, Cebu Pacific Air, South East Asian Airlines (Seair) in partnership with Tiger Airways of Singapore, Jin Air and Airphil Express while full-service carriers include Asiana Airlines of South Korea, and Hong Kong-based Dragonair.

Luciano attributed the increase in the passenger volume to the additional flights initiated by both international and domestic low-cost carriers as well as full service carriers operating at the 2,367-hectare Clark Civil Aviation Complex.

Luciano noted that seven budget carriers currently operate on a 24-hour basis at the airport here.

“The airport is now bustling with 296 aircraft movements per week and is expected to increase further as Zest Airways is slated to launch daily international flights from Clark to Incheon, South Korea later this month,” he added.

Luciano had earlier proposed to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) the setup of a Budget Terminal that would initially accommodate close to 10 million passengers annually.

The proposed Budget Terminal would be similar to the Kuala Lumpur International Low Cost Carrier Terminal in Malaysia.

The existing passenger terminal can only accommodate 2.5 million passengers annually and the CIAC management is in the process of evaluating the procedures for Phase II of the expansion of the terminal that would cost around P360 million and increase the capacity to four million passengers annually.
