Central Luzon will be on tourism map: mayor

April 15, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan vowed to put the provinces of Aurora Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales as well as towns and cities in Central Luzon on the tourism map.

Pamintuan was appointed chairman of the committee on tourism of the Regional Development Council (RDC) during its Full Council Meeting at Heroes Hall last Monday.

“We will put the region in the tourism map. It is the number one problem in the region because it is encompassing. Dapat may infrastructure iyan. How can you sell your region if you don’t have any infrastructure?” he said.

He said tourism entails peace and order and projection of the marketability of the region. “So must have all the foundations. That is why the committee on tourism is a special, strategic committee,” he added.

Pamintuan said Central Luzon is not included in the 12 tourist destinations in the country.

“Only five percent of tourists come to our region. It was [tourism secretary] Ace Durano who told me that when I was with him in the Cabinet of former President Gloria [Macapagal-Arroyo]. He said ‘Manong Ed, exposed na po ang region ninyo. Mayaman. Ang pino-project ko po ngayon ay Bicol at Visayas.’ So Region III (Central Luzon) is not really included on the tourism map last year. So this is what we are going to do for this year,” he said.

He said that initially, he would meet with all regional and local offices to discuss the committee’s plans and programs after the Holy Week. “What we need to do also is create local tourism offices. A lot of towns and cities do not even have tourism offices or departments.”

Tourist destination

Pamintuan said his chairmanship of the tourism committee suits well the Angeles City government’s plan to veer away from being branded as “entertainment capital of the region” to a real wholesome and prime tourist destination.

“For me, it was surprising that the hotel and bar owners association came up with a website selling the city itself. Only 10 percent is focused on bars and hotels. They instead projected in the web the other quality tourist destinations in the city like heritage, Sapang Bato trek and many more,” he said.

“Ang sabi ko nga lang ay huwag muna na nilang ilabas ito dahil kulang pa. There are many more destinations in Angeles City that will be included in our tourism infrastructure and in this paradigm shift from entertainment capital to a real tourist destination,” he added.
