There could only be a couple of issues of the local newspapers that does not carry stories of accusations and counter accusation between rival Angeles City mayor Edgardo Pamintuan and Congressman Carmelo Lazatin.
In this paper alone, yesterday notably bore stories about the two officials but were not the “usual” mudslinging against each other. The exchange of accusations between Lazatin and Pamintuan, and their supporters, had become almost daily that when there are no stories about the trade of barbs between the erstwhile friends already constitute a good story in itself. It is like a news of truce between forces that had been at war for a long time.
The local media feasts on the daily stories churned by the two feuding camps and they are making it easy for some reporters to come up with their story quota for the day. For us in the media, whatever bad news one camp has about the other is always good news.
But, are these good news to the media also good news to Angeleños? Do they benefit from the daily word war that the two officials have waged against each other since the day they decided to forget the friendship and be hardcore nemeses?
In the media, we know for a fact that the two have had significant accomplishments for the people of Angeles but do all the residents know these?
Instead of the exchange of blows that sometimes land below the belt, the two should instead focus on their respective accomplishments and agenda for the City of Angeles in the next three years after the May election.
Angeles City, which is close to a former US air base should be one the few localities in Pampanga that inherited some good traits of Americans, preferably the one the white race exhibits during the election.
The two parties, too, have been respected politicians in Pampanga and they should start acting as they were before this childish charade erupted. Politicians from other places in the province look up to them. May they not ruin this good image by allowing themselves to further go down to the level of those who join petty street brawls. There are no fists flying, yes, but if tongues will not be checked we’ll soon expect some, at least among the supporters. It’s just a matter of who will draw first blood.
