Biz sector alarmed with growing crime rate

January 28, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (PamCham) vice chairman Rene Romero said on Tuesday that the business sector is alarmed with the increasing rates of carjacking, theft and other crime incidents where mostly legitimate businessmen are the victims.
Romero’s reaction came on the heels of recent carjacking and killing incidents, where Pampanga took center stage as a “dumping ground and stage-off point for heinous crimes.”
Romero said his group is alarmed and worried because “our investors may change plans. If they have plans to relocate here or expand, they might change their minds or hold back, which may not be good for the city and the region as a whole.”
He further expressed his dismay over the fact that major criminals have opted to base themselves here. This after the discovery of criminal lairs in Pampanga, particularly in San Fernando, Angeles, soon-to-be-city Mabalacat, and, lately, Mexico.
Romero said the PamCham leadership, led by Chairman Emeritus Levy Laus and the president, Jim Jimenez, met the other day. “We plan to talk to the PNP [Philippine National Police] to enhance their capability on intelligence. We also would discuss this with local government units in Pampanga to monitor migrants so all officials, including barangay executives would be alerted in this worrying scenario,” he said in an exclusive interview.
“We have become a dumping site. The crimes are perpetrated elsewhere but we take the cudgels for them. We have become the recipients of that negative impact, so we are trying to collaborate with concerned agencies on this,” he said.
Romero said that as far as PamCham is concerned, they have alerted their members, plus employees, to become part of anti-crime measures like “Bantay Bayan”.
“That is so because if they see something abnormal or suspicious, we will give them the telephone numbers of police and other emergency numbers, where we all can participate in crime prevention,” Romero concluded. (Jovi T. De Leon)
