BFP clears mall after Sunday’s fire

April 20, 2011
EMPLOYEES and stall owners of Robinsons Place were allowed inside the mall to clean their place and retrieve their items yesterday, after Bureau of Fire and Protection fire marshal Supt. Aderson Comar issued a clearance Monday.
The store management yesterday issued its first official statement since the establishment caught fire last Sunday.

No one was harmed and the premises were immediately evacuated. The mall, located at Fuente Osmeña, is currently undergoing cleaning and thorough inspection,” a press statement emailed to Sun.Star Cebu said.
The management said the lower level of the mall will be operational again by April 25.

The store’s food court and supermarket are two of the areas located at the lower level of the mall. Some floors of the adjacent Cebu Midtown Hotel have been under renovation since last February.
Damaged
Earlier, it was reported that the second floor and basement of the mall were damaged.
A stall owner from the third floor of the building also said the ceiling of the mall was damaged.
“Pag-abot namo sa among stall didto, we saw nga ang celing is nahagba gyud. Then ang among mga items dili na gyud mabaligya kay it had also been affected (The ceiling collapsed. Our goods are now worthless),” said by the stall owner who refused to be named.
Smoke and water damaged their goods, she said.
She said they have not yet talked to the management.
Meanwhile, mall employees still have their jobs, although it is the management’s decision when they can report back to work.
Last Monday, mall workers started cleaning the mall.
Chief fire investigator SFO1 Vivencio Talle said they are still conducting their investigation.
Initial reports said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.
Talle and his team interviewed witnesses who were inside the mall when the incident happened.
The mall’s administrative department is conducting an inventory to determine the total extent of the damage.
There was no announcement yet on when the mall will reopen.
