Bataan Bishop bats for responsible voting
BALANGA CITY–Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos of the Diocese of Balanga has initiated a dialogue with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Department of Education (DepEd), police and military officials, and local media men to discuss election concerns and problems in the forthcoming mid-year elections.
Santos has announced the other day at Sacerdotal Residence, retirement home of priests, located in Taglesville, Barangay San Jose, this city, that he issued three pastoral letters on responsible voting to be read in all churches in the province on April 28, May 5 and May 12.
In his own “Limang Utos sa Responsableng Pagboto” (Five Commandment for Responsible Voting), Santos said the “order” is being read during the homily in various parish churches in Bataan.
Santos read the “Limang Utos” during the meeting with representatives of the Comelec, the local police, Philippine Army, DepEd and local media men, which he said aimed to enlighten the voting populace about selecting candidates based on individual conscience and intelligent evaluation of performance of the aspiring local candidates.
The said commandment urged the voters to take into consideration the God Almighty and religious beliefs; know the capability of candidate to run for public office; vote for candidates who are against the death penalty, divorce law, euthanasia, abortion, total population control, homosexual; and those who are not in favor of mining and illegal logging and illegal drugs.
“This election, voters should prove that they are true-blooded Bataenos who truly believed in God,” Santos said. He also urged the local voters not take advantage of the dignity of the people’s right to suffrage and never compromise the future of the province.
Col. Michael Samson, commander of the 24th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army based in Palawig, Zambales said there had been no reported election hot spot in the province much less the so-called private army of politicians.
“Nonetheless, we are in the process of validating reports of alleged armed group in the province,” he said.
Samson said the province is not included in the election watch list and no existing armed groups so far, the military intelligence monitoring reports cited in the latest evaluation. ●Butch Gunio
