Backfire
Propaganda and political gimmicks oftentimes help candidates win elections. Politicians get to exploit media mileage via mainstream or mere words of mouth to propel their sagging public image and turn it around into something sensational and winnable.
However, there are gimmicks that backfire if mishandled. Instead of providing the kick to a deteriorating image, poorly executed propaganda even cause complete destruction of a politician’s appeal to the public.
There was in the past a candidate for governor who played up a romance with a controversial movie actress to salvage a candidacy that was heavily affected by negative publicities during his father’s incumbency for the position he was aspiring for. The candidate played the gimmick pretty well and went away with the win.
Comes now the issue of alleged death threat received by the camp of Pampanga Third District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales, Jr. over the weekend. The hoopla suddenly hit the headlines of local news outfits and the congressman becoming instant hot stuff after relatively being seldom seen in the media.
We are not saying that the death threat wasn’t real. What we just want to point out that it has given Gonzales the possible leverage to be instant news material meriting media coverage over his usual media appearances as a result of his different projects.
With a news as big as death threats, Gonzales needs not invite media personalities to cover his events and they will go look for him for an interview or two. That’s free exposure to elude the restrictive resolution of the Commission on Elections limiting the number of minutes for media appearances.
The issue, too, could earn for the congressman public sympathy that could translate to votes.
This early, true or not, the death threat issue is benefiting the candidacy of Gonzales. But, when the elections come closer, it should only be true, otherwise, it will backfire to spell doom to the solon’s bid for re-election.
