7,561 loose firearms recorded in Pampanga
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Some 7,561 unlicensed firearms in the province had been accounted for by the Regio-nal Special Operations Task group (RSOTG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Of this total number of accounted firearms with expired or revoked licenses, at least 89 are now in the custody of the Pampanga Provincial Police Office (PPO).
This was the result of the intensified Oplan Katok which was launched last December 2012, according to Pampanga provincial police director, Senior Superintendent R’win Pagkalinawan.
Paglinawan, together with the RSOTG commander and newly installed Deputy Regional Director for Operations, Senior Superintent Virgillo Lazo, said 89 firearms of different calibers were turned-over to the PNP for safekeeping.
Pagkalinawan said 16 of the 89 firearms were turned-over by gun holders who are no longer interested in renewing their licenses, while the rest will be kept pending the processing of the licenses.
The breakdown of the 7,561 firearms as of January 14 are as follows: 1,338 un-renewed licenses recorded but cannot be located; 1,249 cannot be located on the address being stated by the gun owners; 421 on-going renewal; 182 with updated licenses; 346 loose firearms; 245 sold with un-transferred ownership; 89 are in safekeeping; and, 2,557 notified.
The Oplan “Katok” is part of the Philippine National Police (PNP) strategy to ensure Safe and Fair Elections (SAFE) comes May this year.
All police personnel have been utilized to maximize the operations against unregistered firearm.
The police director said some of the gun owners failed to renew their firearm licenses due to financial constraint.
Pagkalinawan appealed to gun owners to surrender their guns to authorities for safekeeping while they do not have enough cash to pay for the license.
Pagkalinawan said after two years, authorities will file search warrant against firearm holders who failed to comply with the government requirements.
With this, Central Luzon police director Chief Superintendent Edgardo Ladao commended the Pampanga police and RSOTG on the result of their campaign against loose firearms. ●marna dagumboy-del rosario
