35 Filipinos repatriated from Libya

SOME 35 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) boarded the chartered boat by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) that will take them out of strife-torn Libya, Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said on early Friday.
In a text message, the DFA official said that the boat picked up foreign workers, including Filipinos, from the port of Tripoli to take them to the city of Benghazi — an area being controlled by the pro-democracy groups.
From Benghazi, which is located near the Libya-Egypt border, the Filipino repatriates will be traveling by land to Egypt where they will then board a commercial flight to Manila.
The Philippine government will shoulder the cost of the Cairo-Manila trip.
Some 91 OFWs earlier registered for repatriation, but Hernandez said they could not be all brought to the port “because of heavy fighting in the streets of Tripoli.”
The IOM has earlier reserved 400 seats for Filipino workers.
“The embassy team will try to fetch them tomorrow for a second boat trip,” he added.
There are still more than 1,500 Filipinos, mostly nurses, left in Tripoli and surrounding areas.
The bulk of Filipino workers left for Manila at the height of the crisis in mid-February to March of this year.
The department has raised alert level 4 in the entire of Libya, which means mandatory evacuation.
DFA Undersecretary Rafael Seguis is currently in the country to convince Filipinos to avail of the Philippine government’s repatriation program.
Clashes between rebel groups and forces of Libyan President Moummar Gaddafi continue to ensue despite the rebels overtaking Tripoli, the seat of Gaddafi’s power.
Reports said that Gaddafi refuses to step down from power, and promised bloodshed if pro-democracy groups continue to protest against his 42-year regime.
Earlier, Libyan diplomatic posts in different countries raised the flag of the National Transitional Council (NTC), showing support for Libya’s possible new government.
