1 of 5 Cagayan jail escapees nabbed
MANILA — A provincial jail detainee charged with murder and 15 counts of carnapping was finally arrested by authorities nine months after his prison escape.
Romer Agapito Romero, who is also charged with robbery and illegal possession of firearms, was arrested at Purok 6, Barangay Mabayuan, Olongapo City on September 9, according to the Cagayan Police Regional Office.
Romero bolted at the Cagayan Provincial Jail together with Romero Tasi, Christopher Tasi, Vincent Badajos, and Kevin Chua on December 11, 2011.
Authorities then launched Oplan Manhunt Charlie to crack down the jail escapees, even conducting operations outside the Cagayan region.
Last month, Philippine National Police Chief Nicanor Bartolome revealed that series of jailbreaks were recorded in some police detention cells since last year.
The jailbreaks include the escape of nine inmates from the Quezon City Police District Station 5 on September 14, 2011; the escape of three prisoners from the Bago City Police Station jail in Negros Occidental last March 21; and the escape of 10 prisoners from the Mandaluyong City Police Station last May 16.
Bartolome ordered police offices and units to address the overcrowding problem in temporary lock-up cells as prison congestion is believed to be a reason behind the jailbreaks.
Also last month, the Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) and the National Bureau of Investigation revealed that 60 to 70 jail inmates are able to bolt prison every year.
Just last week, a convict of a Bucor penal colony in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, was able to briefly escape detention.
Allan M. Abadillo, 33, resident of Malolos City, Bulacan, escaped a security compound of the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm but was also arrested after authorities discovered him sneaking in a marine vessel.
Meanwhile, the Cagayan Valley Region police vowed to arrest jail escapees and other law breakers.
“I warn again criminals and wanted persons in the region to stop hiding because they can never escape the long arms of the law,” said Police Chief Superintendent Rodrigo de Gracia, regional director of the Cagayan Valley police. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
