CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) and the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PamCham) will lead the massive urban greening project along MacArthur Highway as part of their commitment to replace trees cut by the on-going road widening project.

PamCham, led by its president Rene Romero, led a multisectoral delegation during Tuesday’s inspection of the MacArthur Highway.

The inspection was meant to identify areas where new trees will be planted and place them in locations that are safe to motorists.

Romero said that the move is part of the fulfillment of the DPWH to replace the removed trees by November 19 in an event dubbed as “Urban Tree Planting.”

“We can now be assured that the trees are placed in the proper location and could be taken cared of by the participants in the tree planting. The old trees along the path of the road widening must go so that the people would reap the economic and social benefits from a good road infrastructure,” Romero said.

The inspection team included the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, Asian College of Science and Technology (ACSAT), San Fernando Electric Light & Power Company, Inc. (SFELAPCO), business men and concerned citizens.

Romero said that the tree planting will be conducted along the one meter right-of-way a few meters away from the newly constructed canals of the widening project.

Romero said that the DENR has committed to provide the needed seedlings for the program.

Adopt a tree project

The DPWH said that PamCham will be coordinating the planting of trees through the help of partners.

PamCham, Romero, said is currently seeking partners for the “adopt a tree” program.

Romero said that government, private companies and students will be participating in the tree planting activity.

DENR Regional Director Ricardo Calderon told Sun.Star Pampanga that the trees that would be planted along MacArthur Highway are those that do not grow too large and become road hazards.

“The trees we are going to plant are those that grow at a maximum of seven feet high,” Calderon, said stressing that at least three varieties of trees would soon grow in the area.

According to him, species would include Banaba, Bignay, Balitbitan and Golden Shower which are good carbon arrestors. Calderon said that the trees would be planted alternately.

The November 19 tree planting will be a kick-off program for a series of other tree planting campaigns with the government agencies.

The tree planting series would also target dikes and slopes along Mt. Arayat. PamCham has committed to take care of the trees for one year. The DPWH, for its part, has started the clearing of obstructions and illegal encroachment in the area.

Open invitation

The DPWH and PamCham is also extending the invitation to the “opposition group” in the road widening project.

Recently, the Save the Trees Coalition staunchly opposed the removal of the said trees. Romero said that he is inviting the coalition to join them in the said activity.

He added that schools and institutions along MacArthur Highway are also invited in the said event.

The event will start at 7 a.m. on November 19. Participating groups include Leadway Construction, ACSAT, National Economic and Development Authority, Department of Trade and Industry, Advocacy for the Development of Central Luzon and the City Government of San Fernando.
