BACOLOR — The Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) is celebrating its 150th founding anniversary with a year-long schedule of events that will culminate on December 8 to 10.
Dr. Laura Miriam Buenviaje said over-all committee chair for the celebration on November 4, 2011 marks the 150th founding anniversary of one of the oldest trade schools in Asia and currently the only state university in Pampanga.

“However, we decided to hold the grand week-long activities in December and also hold monthly events to build-up the anticipation for the grand celebration,” Buenviaje told Sun.Star Pampanga.
DHVTSU president Enrique Baking said the celebration started last January with the promotion of DHVTSU programs, logo design contest in February, creation and promotion of DHVTSU memorabilia in March, exhibit of Alumni works in April and tree planting this May.
Baking added that this year’s celebration runs with the theme “DHVTSU at 150: Glorifying the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Transforming the Future.”
Other activities for the year include cultural presentations, fun run, intramurals, and a lecture series among others.
“We will also be launching our coffee table book for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary,” Baking said, stressing that the book will cover the history and achievements of the university since its initial founding.
Baking said a grand celebration is also set on December 8 to 10 with a grand alumni homecoming, cultural presentations, booths, and a job fair.
The event will also feature programs set by the student council. Baking is urging all alumni of the school to join in the celebration and become one with the DHVTSU family in honoring the legacy of the first state university in Pampanga.
The school was officially founded on November 4, 1861 upon the approval of its statutes by Governor-General Lemery and was then called “Escuela de Artes Y Oficios de Bacolor.”
DHVTSU, before becoming a state university, was given different names as it expanded its scope and services throughout its history. It was also known as Pampanga Trade School in 1909 and became popularly known as the “Trade School” or the “Poor Man’s College.” By virtue of Republic Act 1388, the school was converted into a Regional School of Arts and Trades, and was renamed Pampanga School of Arts and Trades.
In 1964, the school was renamed Don Honorio Ventura Memorial School of Arts and Trades in honor of Don Honorio Ventura, a prominent son of Bacolor who was a statesman and philanthropist and later to Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trades (DHVCAT).
In June 2009, Gonzales committed his time and efforts to pursuing House Bill 6319, “An Act Converting DHVCAT into Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University.”
