When diet after diet continues to fail, maybe it is time to look past the calorie counting and look to the body for answers. Compulsive eaters, who have trouble sticking to their diets, may be food addicts according to a recently released study. Addictions are defined as a dependency on certain substances or even behaviors. What qualifies a compulsion as an addiction is how the body reacts and what triggers are present. Compulsive eaters show similar activities in the brain as those seen in drug addicts and alcoholics.
The results of this study have shown that exposure to certain ‘food cues’ activates the brain’s reward circuitry confirming the theory that food addictions are biologically driven and not just a behavioral problem. Scientists have long seen the clues that some compulsive eaters show an addiction similar to substance addictions since both addictions trigger the release of dopamine. Until now, no correlation has been made qualifying food addicts as an accepted measure of addiction.
Studies were done on women, who were first assessed and given a food addiction score. Then tested, using a type of MRI, to monitor the brains response to foods. Certain results were discovered immediately; women with higher food addiction scores showed a much higher activity in the brain where other addictive activities are observed.
Other studies have clearly shown that one-third of Americans are considered extremely overweight or obese. Doctors overwhelmingly agree that obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death and needs to be addressed. Further studies of food addictions are needed as hunger and food choices have so many variables. In some of the findings of this study, researchers noticed subliminal symptoms like cravings in the same area of the brain. Food cravings may be a powerful incentive to eat but may not qualify as an all-out addiction.
Despite the limitations of this study, researchers found that the specific nerve patterns that were activated suggested addictions similar to those in substance addictions. Especially worrisome in this study were the findings that mere images of the desired food could set off these brain triggers. Given the environment in which we live with food ads plastered everywhere, a food addict would have a harder time dealing with such addiction.
Advertising is a fact of life and can have a powerful influence over the choices we make. If the images of food trigger the addiction, it would be almost impossible for many to overcome the addiction without help. This could have widespread effect on the public health and of course, the cost of health care. Accepting food addiction as a disease may reduce the stigma attached to those who are overweight and could lead to more productive methods of losing weight and sustaining the weight loss.
Methods to treat addictions have changed and in doing so treat the person and the addiction. This study shows that a similar approach to obesity and compulsive eating may have better and longer lasting results than simply dieting alone.
