Reds present in 97 Cordillera villages
THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) reported to members of the Regional Peace and Order Council the continued presence of New Peoples’ Army in 97 villages of the region.
For the first half of the year, Major Edward Viteño of the 501st Brigade of the Philippine Army based in Kalinga said 88 are classified as threatened barangays because of the continued presence of insurgents.
Kalinga has the highest number of threatened barangays with 35, followed by Mt. Province with 34, Benguet with eight, Ifugao with six and Apayao with five threatened barangays.
The AFP also showed 36 communist rebels monitored in Kalinga, 35 rebels in Mt. Province and 24 in Ifugao. Viteño estimated the firearms by these troops all over the region to be around 113.
The AFP also monitored 350 non-violent activities of the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front-New People’s Army in the provinces of Kalinga, Ifugao and Mt. province.
Most of these non-violent activities involve sighting, foraging, encampment, extortion and propaganda activities.
The AFP also reported its encounter with insurgent troops last February in Barangay Tanglag, Lubuagan, Kalinga and February 26 in Asipulo, Ifugao.
The government troops also reported the surrender of a Johny Tawagon who identified himself as a member of the CPP-NPA in Kalinga last May 10 and the apprehension of three Militia ng Bayan operatives in Barangay Kiling, Alfonso Lista, Ifugao.
Meanwhile, Col. Danny Pabunan claimed they are continuously gaining headway in their Bayanihan efforts in Abra’s 27 towns.
He added they will continue their Oplan Bayanihan activities in the countryside of Abra to finally end years of conflict between government and communist rebels.
Through Oplan Bayanihan the AFP has already helped in the construction of school buildings, water systems, health centers, and farm to market roads and other development projects to alleviate poverty in far-flung communities.
