CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) chief Art Punzalan on Tuesday expressed alarm over the gravity of water pollution plaguing rivers and channels all over the province.

Punzalan, during the public hearing on toxic waste and waste management presided by Provincial Board Committee on Environment Nestor Tolentino at the Capitol, presented a fully documented report showing the sorry state of waterways in the province.

“The improper disposal of industrial and domestic wastes is affecting fresh water marine life and even agriculture. Definitely, an immediate but long-term solution to the problem must be drawn and implemented,” he said.

Punzalan showed some rice plants, from Barangay Telacsan in Macabebe, that have been affected by water pollution as “short in size, black in color and unable to bear fruit”.

“This is an evident effect of water pollution to agriculture. Our farmers are grossly affected by the condition of our rivers where they draw irrigation water for their rice fields,” he said.

Punzalan also revealed that some local fishermen in Apalit use a type of pesticide to catch “ulang” (freshwater shrimps).

“They use the pesticide Cimbus to catch ‘ulang.’ They puncture the container and release the pesticide to catch them. We have valid reports that those who bought and ate the ‘ulang’ suffered severe abdominal pains,” said Punzalan.

He enjoined all municipal and city environment committees to enforce environmental laws and start solid waste management at the barangay level, which he pinpointed as the very source of pollutants.

In a succeeding interview, Punzalan said that Capitol will immediately launch a massive information drive on segregation, proper waste disposal and environmental protection to avert the growing issue of water pollution. (Jovi T. De Leon)
