PORAC, Pampanga–Officials of Porac thanked former President and Pampanga’s Second District Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for approving the release of P2 million from her office’s fund through the Department of Public Works and Highways for about 200 meters of farm to market roads (FMR) for Purok 6 of Barangay Calzadang Bayu.

Porac outgoing Councilor Homer David, a six-term councilor of the municipality, said: “We are thankful of Madame GMA sa mga projects nya. Marami syang binigay na farm to market roads sa Bayu.”

Arroyo spearheaded the construction of about a kilometer of FMR worth P5 million, rehabilitation of FMR in Purok 2 Pabungan area worth P1 million, and gave various assistance for the lined canal construction and covered stage court construction, aside from the scholarship grants, medical assistance and Philhealth, and free services during medical and dental missions.

Notable, David added “if it were not for Madame GMA, baka lumubog na rin ang Calzadang Bayu” referring to the huge support Arroyo approved for the desilting of Pasig Portrero River that broke out years back. This flood control work is part of the Mt. Pinatubo Hazard Urgent Mitigation Project (PHUMP) prioritized during the stint of former President Arroyo and now continued as congresswoman, to control flooding in lowland areas of Porac and nearby municipalities.

The accelerated lahar flooding control works in PPR involves the desilting of meters-thick pyroclastic-flow deposits and repair of breached points, averting mudflows even when deposition continuous during heavy rainfall.

David also added “Calzadang Bayu can sleep peacefully at night” free from looming fear of death as experienced by others during lahar mudflows in the past.

Calzadang Bayu is still challenged with the needed projects in the barangay but hopeful that Arroyo wins second term.• Marna Dagumboy-del Rosario
