MANILA (Updated 7:26 a.m.) — Classes in all levels, including college level, in the National Capital Region (NCR) were suspended Wednesday as Tropical Storm Juaning (international codename: Nock-ten) continues to threaten Central Luzon including Metro Manila.
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. made the announcement as recommended by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda also announced around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday the suspension of classes.
The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier suspended classes on Wednesday in all levels for public and private schools in areas affected by the storm.
Senate Juan Ponce Enrile also announced that there will be no work for the members of the Senate Wednesday due to “Juaning”.
House Speaker Sonny Belmonte also cancelled work and session at the House of Representatives.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) still placed 36 areas under storm warning alert, as of 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Public storm signal number two is still hoisted over Camarines Norte, Quezon, Polillo Island, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Benguet, La Union, and Metro Manila.
Placed under signal number one are Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Burias Island, Romblon, Mindoro Provinces, Lubang Island, Isabela, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao and Cagayan.
Fatalities
Meanwhile the number of fatalities due to the storm has risen to 14, the NDRRMC said in its 6 a.m. Wednesday bulletin.
The fatalities include 10 people from Northern Mindanao — seven in Albay, two in Catanduanes and one in Camarines Sur.
A television report said Wednesday that another two persons were reported dead in Catanduanes.
Two persons also died in Cavite, one in Marinduque, and one in Iloilo.
The NDRRMC also said 31 persons were injured, and nine went missing due to “Juaning”.
As of 4 a.m. Wednesday, “Juaning” was 90 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, packing maximum winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 100 kph. It is moving west northwest at 11 kph.
Pagasa said “Juaning” will make landfall over Polillo Island from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and over southern Aurora by 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and will traverse Central Luzon
It said the storm will leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday morning.(Sunnex)
