CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez on Tuesday said his Taskforce Habitat team is ready to partner with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in enforcing strict laws against illegal encroachment along MacArthur Highway.

Rodriguez made the announcement during a focus group discussion with DPWH Regional Director Alfredo Tolentino, Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PamCham) president Rene Romero and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Director Ricardo Calderon.

“We are going to implement the law. The MacArthur Highway should be free of obstruction from illegal encroachments to effectively maximize its use and make it safe for motorists,” Rodriguez said, stressing that buildings and structures which have been built within the road right of way would be removed.

Rodriguez also ordered the Buildings Permit Division of the City Government to consider existing laws and ordinances in issuing permits to businesses and establishments operating along the area of the MacArthur Highway to identify illegal encroachments.

Rodriguez also assured the people during the meeting that the city government will be working closely with the San Fernando Electric Light & Power Company, Inc. (SFELAPCO) and the DPWH in placing power pole lines in proper designated areas along the road right of way.

PamCham President Rene Romero said that they would be calling for a meeting with the telecom companies who are also using SFELAPCO lines to remove “spaghetti cables” and to arrange their lines along the proper designated posts.

“We are happy that Mayor Oca is very supportive of the plans to make MacArthur free from illegal encroachment. We in the private sector will continuously work closely with the city government,” Romero said.

The DPWH and the City Government are set to strictly implement anti-illegal encroachment starting Wednesday.
