CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — About 7,000 sugar farmers and workers from Pampanga and Tarlac rallied against the importation of foreign-produced sugar by a giant bottling company.
The sugar farmers and workers held the rally in front of the Coca-Cola Company field office in Barangay Baliti Wednesday.
Marcelino Aganon, spokesperson of the Central Azucarera de Tarlac Planters Association (Catpa), said the giant soda company had been importing sugar from abroad, which have badly affected the local sugar industry.
The Catpa is a member of the Confederation of Sugar Producers Association of the Philippines.
Aganon said the Coca-Cola Company has imported pre-mixed sugar from neighboring countries for several years.
“If it’s a pre-mixed sugar, the company is saved from paying tariff fees of about 38 percent. However, laboratory tests showed that the sugar they import is not pre-mixed, it’s actually refined sugar,” Aganon said.
He said the alleged pre-mixed sugar imported by the bottling company had food color or flavoring in it so it appears pre-mixed.
“That way, they are also committing fraud to the government, as they are evading tariff fees,” Aganon said.
Moreover, Aganon said the local sugar industry is badly affected.
“We were wondering why we had a lot of supplies, which is making the price of sugar cheaper until we found out that Coca-Cola stopped getting supplies from local farmers,” Aganon said.
Aganon said CC had only been importing a small amount of pre-mixed sugar abroad, but in the past two years, they had been importing most of their sugar needs.
“They’re killing the sugar industry,” Aganon said, adding that local farmers and workers dependent on the sugar industry had been losing earnings.
Meanwhile, the Coca Cola Company provincial field office said their national administrators will be the one to address the local farmers’ concern. (Charlene Cayabyab)
