CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — For a maximum of P2, the mosquito-borne dengue disease will no longer be a threat to families in Central Luzon.

To stop the spread of dengue even during the summer season, officials from the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Luzon has launched the Ovicidal and Larvicidal mosquito trap (Ovitrap).

The Ovitrap is the new anti-dengue product of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) that only uses one black cup, a piece of lawanit wood or any absorbent wood and a pepper-made solution.

The black color of the cup attracts mosquitoes to lay their eggs on the strip of lawanit wood and the solution would then kill the resulting larvae.

Julius Caesar Sicat, officer-in-charge of the DOST in Central Luzon, said complicated tools to eradicate dengue are not needed because there are simple and cheap ways to do the job like the Ovitrap.
“Mosquito repellant costs P145 but the solution only costs P1-P2. With mosquito repellants, one spray certainly eliminates the mosquitoes but they still turn up the following week. With the Ovitrap, the propagation of mosquitoes would eventually stop,” Sicat said.

Regional DOST and DOH officials distributed 4,000 Ovitrap kits to selected households in San Jose City, Bulacan to test the effectiveness of the anti-dengue product.  The city serves as the pilot testing area of the new anti-dengue product.

Each household received four kits to be used for a month.

Dr. Rhodora Cruz, regional dengue program coordinator, said the product would be tested in Brgy. Gumaok East in the city to monitor its efficacy and then later be promoted to other provinces in Central Luzon and in other regions.

DOST would be distributing 11,200 more Ovitrap kits in the region which will last for six months. After which, the local government units would have the discretion to purchase the product.

Meanwhile, DOH Assistant Regional Director Benito Arca advised the public to maintain the cleanliness of their surroundings to lessen the number of dengue victims.

“Mosquitoes lay 60-100 eggs at a time. A human could only produce one at a time so mosquitoes are faster to reproduce. It is needed to search for their breeding sites and destroy them,” Arca said.
