CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — An interfaith service will highlight the commemoration of the 20th Memorial Day of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, said Fr. Resty Lumanlan, SVD.
“Ang Mt. Pinatubo eruption 20 years ago ay gawa ng Diyos at hindi ng tao (it was act of God and not of man). Yet, it must be remembered and celebrated in a spiritual way because of God’s mercy and the triumph over it by Kapampangans,” said Fr Lumanlan, chairman of the City of San Fernando’s Interfaith Service Committee.
The interfaith service precedes the thanksgiving banquet on June 15.
“The interfaith service is a response in prayer and reflection of the different churches in Pampanga in celebration of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. And then the response of the Kapampangans in saving Pampanga and rising from the destruction leading to what we are now enjoying,” the prelate told Sun.Star Pampanga.
Lumanlan stressed that the interfaith service – which will be participated in by Roman Catholics, Muslims, Christians, Methodists and Baptists – will revolve around celebration, thanksgiving and obedience.
“We would celebrate our triumph over two challenges. The first challenge is Mt. Pinatubo, the destruction by nature. The second challenge was the decision then of the National Government to abandon Pampanga and relocate the Kapampangans to safer grounds. The response was the protest and unity rally of September 20, 1995 leading to the construction of the Megadike,” he said.
The interfaith service, Lumanlad revealed, will have three passages that will be taken from the Book of Numbers, the Koran and will be punctuated by the Easter/Resurrection reading. The main reading will be 2nd Chronicles 7:14, which touches on man’s humility and the healing of the land.
There will be community singing of “Heal Our Land,” “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” and the Lord’s Prayer in between reflections, and the service will then be culminated with a thanksgiving prayer by all religious leaders, Lumanlan added.
Meanwhile, various religious groups participating in the interfaith service have professed their willingness to unite in the service as they said it is “Pampanga for Christ and Christ for Pampanga.”
United Methodist Church leader Reynaldo Calalang said: “Despite the Mt. Pinatubo disaster, the love and presence of God is always with us. Everything that happened 20 years ago has its purpose. And we saw God’s purpose there such that Pampanga was able to rise from destruction.”
Bishop Alex Santos agreed, saying it was the Kapampangan’s humility that God gave his hand in response. “After that, God never left us.”
Muslim Community representatives Adelaida Dituialan and Mac Bitiara added: “Long before Mt. Pinatubo erupted, Muslims have been here and we have always felt like Kapampangans. We are people of this land. Everything that happened 20 years ago had its purpose for man to learn. God wanted us to realize the intention behind so we would have a better life. We are one in celebrating the love of God and the triumph of Pampanguenos.”
