JUST in time for Holy Week, a group of Kampampangan journalists recently launched an exhibit on historic churches in their home province at the SM Mall of Asia. The Edifices of the Kapampangan Faith exhibit showcases breathtakingly beautiful photographs by Peter Alagos, Caesar Lacson, and Diosdado Pangilinan that highlight our traditional Visita Iglesia Lenten tradition.

A tribute to the deep sense of faith Kapampangans are known for, it features a total of 108 vivid photographs of 10 churches and a chapel that celebrate Pampanga’s rich cultural heritage. These are churches that were built during Spanish times, and have survived floods, volcanic eruptions, lahar flows, and wars. Two of these churches, the Sta. Monica Church in Minalin and St. James the Apostle in Betis,

Guagua are national treasures. Others have been witnesses to historic events the Saint Augustine Church in Lubao was occupied by Philippine revolutionaries in 1898 and was used as a hospital in 1899 by American forces; the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando was burned by the Philippine Revolutionary Army on orders by General Antonio Luna in 1899; the Saint William the Hermit Church in Bacolor was constructed in 1576 by Augustinian friars in the town that served as the capital of the Philippines during the British Invasion of Manila from 176265.

Constructed in various architectural styles, many of these churches celebrate Kapampangan artistry and craftsmanship. The Santiago de Galicia Church in Betis beautiful ceiling murals by Simon Flores, as well as paintings on the dome and walls done by local artists led by brothers Martin and Severino Pangilinan. Trompe l’oeil murals at the St. Peter the Apostle Church in Apalit were said to be done by an Italian freelance painter named Cesario Alberoni or a pupil who is a native of the town.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando was restored by Pampanga architect Fernando H. Ocampo; while the beautiful altar of the Immaculate Concepcion Church in Guagua is a recent creation of artist Willy Layug;

The Sta. Rita de Cascia Church in Santa Rita has five heritage bells made by the foundry of H. Semico y Hos Jaboneros; while the Santa Lucia Church in Sasmuan has decorative floral carvings in its entrance and a single belfry between the church and convent the only one of its kind in the country.

The Santa Monica Church in Minalin has four capillas posas or small indoor chapels which distinguish it as “the only church in the Philippines where such integral elements are found in its historic state”
