ANGELES CITY – An environmental organization said the end of Earth would start in 20 to 25 years unless humankind makes drastic measures to reverse global warming.

Audie Anthony F. Menez, vice president for operations of Global Linkages for the Filipino Youth Foundation Incorporated, said humans should plant trees and minimize the use of fossil fuel in order to reverse the progression of climate change.

The rapid melting of the Arctic ice cap would result to massive flooding in several countries, including the Philippines, he said.

“Unless we do something to reverse global warming, several years from now will be the start of the end of life on Earth,” Menez said.

Menez issued the statement when he presented to the Mabalacat municipal council the foundation’s environmental programs, including the world record attempt at Mount Arayat for the most number of planted trees in an hour.

The effects of climate change are somehow being manifested by the incidence of strong typhoons and worsening weather where mere thunderstorms can carry enough floodwaters to inundate an entire region, according to him.

The foundation, Menez said, is organizing and training the youth for its programs, particularly on environmental protection.

The Global Linkages has implemented programs, including environmental education campaign on waste segregation and recycling, tree planting and others.

Menez said the foundation will mobilize some 15,000 students from public schools all over Pampanga to plant some 200,000 trees at Mount Arayat in August this year to set a new Guinness record.

Menez invited local officials to support the foundation’s benefit dinner concert dubbed “A Serenade for Nature,” which will be held on May 28 at the Clark Freeport. (Reynaldo G. Navales
