March 25, 2011

TOMORROW, March 26, at exactly 8:30 p.m., we will observe Earth Hour 2011. On this day and time, millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour to celebrate action for the planet. This event which started in 2007, has reached record participation this year with 131 countries and territories registered to take part, on all seven continents.
Highlighting the event is the lights off in famous landmarks around the world during the Earth Hour. That will include Sky Tower, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Queen’s Palace in Madagascar, Table Mountain in South Africa, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the London Eye, Niagara Falls in Canada, Times Square in New York City, the Obelisk in Argentina and the world heritage site Presidential Palace in Peru.
Here in the Philippines the SM Malls signified their intentions to join the Earth Hour so expect candle lights in their malls for an hour. In Angeles City, the Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MACCII) is spearheading the celebration at the Nepo Quadrangle. The lights off at the Nepo Mall and nearby establishments will highlight the event.
Last year, over a billion people from 128 countries participated in Earth Hour, marking it as the largest environmental event in known human history. Pinoys were the biggest participant. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) the Philippines topped global Earth Hour participation levels for both 2009 and 2010. Ten million Filipinos in 647 towns, cities and municipalities switched off in 2009, while 15 million Filipinos in 1076 towns and cities joined the 2010 switch-off.
Last year, the choice to turn off lights or not was presented in the form of an election. There were two candidates: Earth and global warming.
There were no ballots though. Switching off your lights for one hour means voting for Earth. Leaving them on means you are voting for global warming. Since it was election year in the Philippines, this strategy was effective.
This year’s Earth Hour asks people to go beyond the hour. We are requested to commit to an action, big or small, that we will sustain for the future of our planet. Our little efforts will hopefully be the start of the long journey towards green living. Our environmental problems like global warming, pollution and depletion of natural resources can only be addressed if we all do our share.
Simple energy saving measures like switching lights off when not in use, using CFLs instead of incandescent lamps and turning off appliances instead of putting them on stand-by mode will go a long way. We can reduce the use of fossil fuel by biking, car-pooling and taking public transport. We can offset the carbon dioxide we generate by planting trees.
The main point of Earth Hour is to show the world that a solution to the world’s environmental challenges is possible if we work on them together – together our actions add up! So join na tayo!
