ANGELES CITY — The city’s tourism office has released the list of activities lined-up for the 20th commemoration of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.
With the theme “Turning Tragedy into Triumph”, the city will celebrate life after the widespread destruction caused by the eruption with a series of activities aimed at giving tribute to the city’s ability to rise after a disastrous calamity.

Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said in the face of great and seemingly insurmountable calamity, the Angeleños’ indomitable spirit surfaced and surpassed the challenges, and did much better than expected.
“We painfully remember the devastation, and at the same time, give tribute to our joint efforts by celebrating how we got back on our feet from the throes of the calamity,” Pamintuan said.
The mayor likened the city with the phoenix bird that victoriously rose from the ashes of destruction. Pamintuan was the mayor and the city’s chief executive at that time.
In reminiscing the city’s triumph, the Angeles City Tourism Office (Acto) has scheduled a week-long celebration, but will kick-off on June 4 and 5 with “Padyak Para sa Pag-Bangon” a bike run around the city and “Takbo para sa Pag-kakaisa” a fun run, respectively.
On June 14, an “On-the-Spot Poster-Making Contest” and “Painting Contest” will also take place at SM City Clark where artists, both young and old, from all around the city will compete.
A ceremonial groundbreaking would then follow the next day, June 15, for the commemorative “Phoenix Monument” to be installed at the Marquee/North Luzon Expressway rotunda in barangay Pulung Maragul.
Several events such as the “La Heart and La Art Competition”, photo and video exhibit and book launching would then follow at Marquee Mall.
On the same day, job seekers can jumpstart their careers with a Jobs Fair at Robinson’s Place-Angeles for local and overseas employment.
In the afternoon, there would also be an array of events at the SM City Clark like cultural presentations, photo and video exhibits and the unveiling of the “Phoenix Replica”.
The Museo ning Angeles would also have its share of commemorative activities and presentations at 6 p.m. of the same day.
On June 16, an “On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest” would test the writing prowess of different students from schools in the city at the SM City Clark Training room. Then on the 17th, there would be a “Rap and Dance Competition and Performance Contest” also at SM City Clark.
Finally, the city will have its culminating activity on June 18, which will feature the inauguration of Ospital Ning Angeles’ Renal Care Unit at 10 a.m.
This will be followed by an awarding ceremony and mini-concert featuring Noel Cabangon at the SM City Clark Entrance from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the evening.
