CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Thirty-five colleges and universities in Central Luzon will raise tuition and school fees effective in June this year, the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) regional office said.

Dr. Virginia Akiate, Ched-Central Luzon regional director, said the tuition hike is 12.22 percent or an equivalent of P50 per unit, which school authorities claimed will be used to pay for the teachers’ salaries and upgrading of school facilities.

Akiate said 36 colleges and universities have applied to increase their tuition but 35 private schools were given the privilege.

The region has 185 private universities and colleges.

The tuition hike petition underwent to certain process before it was approved, she said.

She explained that under Ched Memorandum Order 13 issued in 1998, private schools could increase their fees after holding the required consultations with stakeholders.

“It’s a process. First, the schools must inform the Ched 15 days before they will inform the public regarding the tuition fee hike.

School officials need to discuss it with students, parents, alumni, especially the student organizations,” Akiate said.

She said the school needs to give Ched a certificate of intended compliance to where it will use the tuition fee increase.

Ched required them to submit the comparative schedule of tuition – the percent of increase last year and this coming school year, she added.

She also explained that about 70 percent of the tuition goes to the salaries of the teachers, 20 percent for the improvement of the school facilities and 10 percent for the school income.

“We expected the number of enrollees in the private colleges and universities to decrease due to tuition hike.

But we have to understand that private schools need to upgrade their facilities in order to cope up with times,” she added.

Akiate said students have option to enroll in state colleges and universities, which have the same standards as the private schools.
