CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Department of Education (DepEd) has engaged on an improved project called Public-Private Partnership for School Infrastructure Project II (PSIP II) aimed to wipe out the classroom backlog of the country.
In Central Luzon, the project aims to construct some 1,017 classrooms to cut the nationwide backlog of 66,800 classrooms.
Its first phase was only implemented in three regions–Ilocos, Central Luzon, and CALABARZON– wherein 9,301 classrooms had been constructed.
Thirty-one percent of these classrooms are single-storey, while the remaining 69 percent are two-storey type which cost a total of P16.42 billion.
Oliver Hernandez, chief engineer of DepEd, during the Regional Project Monitoring Committee Meeting Monday said PSIP II is a Design-Build Contract.
“Classroom infrastructure is of single to four-storey school buildings; includes blackboards and electrical installations; has a 45-school seats or armchair per classroom and a teacher’s desk and chair,” he explained.
The coverage of the phase II, he explained, covers the country’s 14 out of 17 regions. It involves the designing, financing, and constructing of 10,679 one-storey and two-storey classrooms, including furniture, fixtures, and toilets in 5,167 public schools nationwide.
In Region III alone, DepEd selected 262 school sites where the 1,017 classrooms will be built. At present, Central Luzon has 592 schools and 2,885 classrooms.
“Pre-qualification starts this January until February; bidding from March to June 2013, and the implementation will be from July this year until July 2014,” Hernandez said.
Moreover, the chief engineer added that 480,600 students will benefit from this project where they “will enjoy better learning facilities.”
It will also increase students’ productivity, academic performance and long-term learning potential.
A sample models of the two-storey type classroom building was constructed at the Sta. Isabel Elementary School and Marine Fishery School in Malolos, both in Bulacan province. ●Joelyn G. Baluyut
