2 dead, 5 injured in Sto. Tomas road mishap

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–Two persons died and five others were injured when a car crashed against a tricycle in Sto. Tomas, Pampanga on Sunday dawn.
The fatalities were identified as Manuel Operana and Noel Operana, the driver of the tricycle; both of Barangay Sampaloc, Apalit, Pampanga.
Injured were Jeffrey Arevalo, Juan Cabrera, Remedios Operana, Judith Operana, all residents of Apalit, Pampanga; and Francis Xavier Santillan, driver, of Villa Carmen Subd., San Matias, Sto Tomas, Pampanga.
Investigation showed that Santillan was driving a Black Isuzu Big Horn along MacArthur Highway in Barangay Moras De la Paz, Sto. Tomas, Pampanga at about 3:35 a.m. when he abruptly occupied the other lane and hit a motorcycle driven by Manuel Operana.
As result, Manuel and his passenger, Noel Operana, were thrown several meters from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.
Police said another tricycle, which was tailing the tricycle of Manuel, was also hit and its passengers were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital.
Police said Santillan, together with the vehicles involved in the accident, was placed under police custody.–Froilan E. Magtoto

Dead man discovered in Guagua

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–An unidentified man was found dead kneeling along a Barangay road in Guagua, Pampanga last Tuesday.
According to the police, the body was discovered by Alfredo Sarmiento of Barangay San Vicente, Ebus, Guagua, Pampanga along Paralaya Street in Barangay Vicente at about 4 p.m.
When police arrived at the scene, they saw the victim in a kneeling position with his face laid down on the ground, hands on his back and tied with an orange nylon string while his mouth was covered with a piece of cloth.
Police said, when inspected by a team of scene of the crime operatives (SOCO), the victim was noted to have wounds on the head.
Police described the victim as about 5’8” in height, medium built, fair complexion, and more or less 45 to 50 years old.
Police said the victim is wearing khaki pants and white long-sleeve polo.
The body was brought to the Velasquez Funeral Parlor in Barangay San Nicolas, Lubao, Pampanga for autopsy. –Froilan E. Magtoto

Subic yachting race to draw international teams

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — This February, the aces of Asian yachting will battle for supremacy in the second 200-mile Subic Bay-Boracay Offshore Race.
Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority chairman Roberto Garcia said the exciting sporting event would serve as an excellent platform to further showcase the Subic Bay Freeport and help firm up Subic’s quest for a distinctive spot in the yachting circuit.

“With this new development, we add more muscle to our bid for Subic Bay Freeport to be a major player in the maritime industry, as well as a world-class tourism destination. It will be a sure-fire boost to our efforts to attract more visitors to Subic and the communities nearby,” Garcia said.
Described as one of the most challenging and tactical races in the sailing world, the Subic to Boracay Race 2012 is part of the 12 prestigious regattas in the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship 2011-2012 that will determine the Asian Yachting Skipper and Yacht of the Year.
It will be followed by the four-day Boracay Cup Regatta from February 28 to March 2.
Both races are being organized by the Philippine Sailing Association-backed by the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen’s Sailing (SAGS) Club of Subic and in cooperation with the SBMA, Subic Bay Yacht Club (SBYC), The Lighthouse Marina Resort, Watercraft Ventures, the Subic Bay Freeport Chamber of Commerce, and the provincial governments of Zambales and Aklan.
According to SAGS co-chairman Jun Avecilla, around 30 to 40 Grand Prix Race yachts manned by some 300 to 400 top-notch local and foreign sailors are expected to join the race, which is a successor to the discontinued Manila-Boracay Race.
