DOH wants tobacco-free CL

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–With the recent passage of the Sin Tax law on January 1, the Department of Health Regional Office 3 is into another undertaking wherein it aims to make Central Luzon a tobacco free region a few years from now.
DOH Regional Director Leonito Gorgolon disclosed that with the coordination of the local government units in each municipality and province, along with other sectors, their goal of achieving this will be possible.
Among the department’s aim is the posting of campaign materials on hazards and causes of smoking along major roads. This is already implemented in Balanga City, Bataan.
“Also, is in the field of health promotion which includes proper and healthy diet, regular exercise, and consumption of nutritional foods like fruits and vegetables,” she said.
“We want a 100-percent smoke-free region. If Balanga City could do it, then we can also do it for the whole region, ”Elenita Carreon, Health Promotion and Education officer, said.
“Our vision is Filipinos could be free from tobacco related diseases and reduce morbidity, mortality, and disability rates due to chronic lifestyle related non-communicable diseases. This will be achieved through an integrated and comprehensive program on the prevention and control of lifestyle related diseases,” she added.
Philippines is considered a tobacco-growing country that has high prevalence of tobacco use. The Philippine Global Adult Tobacco Survey data shows that 28.3 percent or 17.3 million of the Philippine population aged 15 years old and above currently smoke tobacco.
Furthermore, Carreon said that, “orders coming from each of the government offices to declare their offices a smoke-free environment have been implemented. Some of these are Commission on Population, National Statistics Office, Philippine National Police, Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education, among others.”
