A few days back, Savvy, a 5th grader studying in an Indian school in Dubai, came home visibly distraught. Her mother, who was used to seeing her sunny girl come home with a smile on her lips and a spring in her steps, immediately asked her what the matter was. There was a wringing and unexplained ache in the mother’s chest even before Savvy opened her mouth. “Please God!” She thought, “let her spell out some childish trouble like Ritika teasing her or Ankita declaring Savvy’s specs didn’t suit her.” Savvy knew how to tackle these trouble-makers and never let her confidence shrink in the face of these hurdles in her childhood journey. Savvy’s mother had prepared her well to face these battles of life. So what was it that put the creases of worry and trouble in her innocent face?

“Mom, today the teacher got a newspaper and showed us the news and picture of child marriage. She told us that in India small girls like me are married off. Don’t their parents love them? Mom, when I told Lita (a 6th grader in her bus) about this, she told me that this is a small thing in comparison to what she reads in the newspapers. In many parts in India, small girls and women are raped, girl babies are killed even before they are born or left on the road, and sometimes, when girls marry without their parents consent, they are killed. Lita said Delhi is called the “rape capital” (489 rapes were reported in 2010 alone). I asked her what a rape is. She told me even she does not understand properly. However, when it happens, a girl’s body is scratched, her clothes are torn and everybody blames her for something and she cries all the time. Sometimes, such girls die or kill themselves. Mom, why do they do all these things in India? Do parents in India not love their daughters? You told me we call India “Bharat Mata” and respect it like our mother. Then, why do women get such treatment in India? I love it when I go home to India. I wanted to go back and live there after Papa had completed his project here, but now I don’t want to go back ever. Susila and Mehek Didi (her cousins) are in India, tell them to come here. I am scared for them; I do not want them to get hurt.”

Savvy’s mother was dumbstruck and tears unwittingly drenched her cheeks. Yes, earlier in the morning, she had read news about rape and child marriage in the Indian section of the newspaper. She and Rahul (Savvy’s father) had discussed how unsafe India had become and they were terrified of the day when they have to go back. Rahul said he can’t imagine how perverts (rapists) can be set off so lightly. Even a sentence of 7 years was not any retribution for a crime that tatters the very soul of a woman/child. She had told Rahul about the shame she felt when her non-Indian friends discussed news of such incidents. But when she listened to her 10 years old’s anxiety, her heart burned. She pulled Savvy and hugged her tight, as if trying to secure her from the troublesome thoughts within the safe haven of her clutch. She knew that even the distance (from India) can’t protect or shield her daughter from the pain that atrocities and crime against women causes. She had tried to erect a beautiful image of her motherland, so that Savvy will look forward to going back there. She knew that while the beauty of her motherland will never cease, there was another dark reality that shadowed its charm. In reality, India was also a place where a 12-year-old rape victim faces the looming dangers of pregnancy; a woman chief minister of a state, where Durga and Kali are revered, issues an official statement that the rape story was fabricated without ascertaining facts; a battered two years old is brought to hospital on Republic Day, revealing a horror story of human trafficking; a woman is gang-raped when she opposes the evil of child-marriage; so called honorable ministers derive pleasure from watching pornographic and rape videos while the House is in progress; women are raped even in police custody; the right to life is snatched away from a female child even in the confines of a mother’s womb and where women are dishonored, tortured, killed, oppressed and marginalized at every step of life. Adding to the list of various dubious distinctions India has gained is the abnormally skewed sex ratio. Widely prevalent female infanticide and early marriage of women resulting in high mortality of mother and child are blamed for this. The degrading status of women cannot be blamed on illiteracy alone. Research has revealed that while tribal communities have low literacy level, the sex ratio is fairly normal. Clearly a civilized society with humanity as its reigning principle doesn’t come with education alone. It comes when we use knowledge to learn and rectify our mistakes, apply it for progress and adopt a progressive attitude.

A mother’s love: Natalie Murphy kisses Jackson, 22 months.

This morning Natalie Murphy got breakfast in bed and flowers from her 22-month-old son Jackson.

It’s special because Natalie’s doctors think this Mother’s Day will be her last, although she’s determined to fight.

“Elephant,” Jackson says, introducing his favourite toy – one Natalie gave him the day he was born. Eight months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, just minutes from a mastectomy, she and husband Greg were told the cancer was in her liver, and that she had two to five years.

She had chemotherapy, but a scan in January showed her tumours were back, bigger than before. She was told she had a year to live.

“When I was given five years, I was convinced I’d live 10. So to have somebody take my worst-case scenario and make it real …”

Today is the 12th anniversary of meeting Greg, who says Natalie shines as a mum every day.

“To watch someone go through this with a smile and still be a mother is amazing. She’s used Jackson as motivation, that’s what gets her up.” That and Greg, who went part-time this month to spend more time at home.

Natalie says: “Because I’m tired, sometimes I’m unmotivated. Greg puts Jackson in the car and before I know it I’m like, `oh, thanks for getting me out of the house’.”

Her latest treatment means she can be at home.

After her first cycle she was told her tumour marker was down.

“I said to Greg, `I’m so going to be here longer than a year’. Everything inside me says a minimum of two years, three hopefully.”

Normal things, like Mother’s Day, are important. “When we don’t have plans we just enjoy being together. When you are faced with your own mortality, that stuff is special,” Natalie says.

She and Greg put Jackson first. “We do family stuff, walks, and the park is his favourite.”

But sometimes she thinks of something she must write down, something she knows she won’t be there to tell him when he’s a teenager.

“Greg and I are going to work on a book of things I want him to do – and not to do – with Jackson.”

Fun, frolic mark Mother’s Day

PATNA: ‘Mom you are the best, Happy Mother’s Day …’ read a placard displayed by the students of Montessori school at New Yarpur. It was real fun time for the students who had lined up various games and surprises for their mothers. Mothers too, in their best attire, joined their kids. House and musical chair, antakshri and `recognize my voice’ were organized. While Kumud Bannerji was adjudged the Best Mom, Sneha became the runner-up.

Tender Hearts International School organized a number of contests for mothers on the occasion, like best dressed, best dancing and best story telling mother. Mamta, Payal and Rashmi Rajan were declared winners in the three competitions, respectively. School director Rajiv Bhargava said “the child’s first teacher is their mother” and announced that a summer camp will commence from May 22 for 10 days.

‘Save mother Earth’ was the theme of celebrations at Shemrock Kids school, where all mothers were dressed in green. The school had also organized ball dance, musical chair and slogan competition, and other fun games.

“Chanda hai tu, mera suraj hai tu …” a touching song was sung by a mother with tears in her eyes at Gardanibagh’s Euro Kids School, which had invited the mothers of all the kids. Children presented a skit and song in praise of their mothers.

Mother’s Day was also celebrated with much fanfare at TELL Play School located at Bhattacharya Road.

Mahavir Vatsalya Aspatal, LCT Ghat, will also be celebrating Mother’s Day as ‘Vaatsalya Day’ on Sunday. Those mothers who delivered from the midnight of April 29 to midnight of May 7 will be specially invited along with their infants for a health check-up and they will be provided free medicines. Healthy mothers and infants will also be rewarded.

JAIPUR: When the world celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, 60-year-old Neeta Chopra has been fighting with brain tumor alone at an old-age home here. Since the last one month, neither of her sons visited nor called.

Another inmate of Shubh Shanti Niwas, Shanti Devi (74), said her three sons and eight daughters had treated her in the same manner.

Chopra said her husband died of brain cancer in 1989 and had to bring up her two sons all by herself.

“I was hand to mouth literally since the medication of my husband was very expensive. My two sons Hemant and Bhupendra were in their teens when my husband died and I was working with the PHED department as a junior accountant. Despite all these, I never compromised with their studies and ensured that both of them could stand up in their lives,” Chopra said when TOI on Mother’s Day interact with mothers who gave up their everything to see that their children’s future is secured.

Recounting her ailment, she said, “Everything was okay until some years ago when I got a fit and fainted. I underwent treatment in Mumbai where life took an ugly turn. The in-laws of my son Hemant, who just got married when I fainted, accused me of stealing the peace of their daughter.”

“Confrontations started at home when I returned from the hospital. My son and daughter-in-law compelled me to live an isolated life in my own house. Nobody spoke to me. To make things better, I even got them a new house and shifted with them after retirement,” Chopra said wiping off a tear.

“Recently, my daughter-in-law started using abusive language with me in front of my son but he kept mum. That’s when I decided to leave them. None of them said anything when I came here. But, let me tell them that I am going to die here and will never seek their help,” she boldly said.

When Chopra was informed that Sunday was Mother’s Day, life seems to slip slowly from her frail body. “I shifted here this month only. Neither my second son Bhupendra who is software engineer and settled in Bangalore nor has Hemant called me till date,” she said with weary eyes.

Shanti Devi also have a sad tale to tell. “I have three sons and eight daughters. I am here for the single blunder I made in my life. After the retirement of my husband, we decided to sell off all our property and give a share to each of our sons. Maybe my three sons now, who are settled in Mathura, Jaipur and Delhi, thought we have zero balance and are useless,” she said.

On Mothers Day, zoo leopards to pen thank you note to mom

LUCKNOW: This mothers day, the inmates of Lucknow zoo will express their love and gratitude towards their mothers by writing letters to them. Not the biological ones but those who have adopted them. Going by the fact that not every inmate at zoo has been adopted and that not every adopter is a woman, the opportunity will be available to a selected few. And the lucky ones will make most of it with zoo administration writing letters, on their behalf, to the women who have adopted them.

To begin with, Ashoka and Nakshatra, two-year old leopard siblings will express gratitude to Dia Mirza.

The actor had visited the zoo in March, 2010, to christen the leopard cubs born to a leopardess, Dia. The animal was rescued from Mirzapur and hence, named Dia Mirzapuri.

It was her name that propelled us to write to the actor telling her about the striking similarity in the names, said Renu Singh, zoo director.

The actor not only christened the cubs but also adopted the two and gave Rs 1 lakh as adoption fee to the zoo.

The adoption scheme of Lucknow zoo has received a huge response from women. At least 50% of the adopters are women. The effort is to say thanks to all of them by sending them letters, said the director.Acknowledgement will also be expressed towards Namrata Bharadwaj, Andrea, Benu Bajaj, Anjali, Rasika, Sushila Singh, Preeti Agarwal, Manjula Khare, Seema Upadhyay, Divyani and Mallika Tripathi.

Most of these women have adopted pheasants, blue-yellow macaw, chinkara, white peacock and cheetal. Zoo will also send a similar letter to its director, who has adopted a blue-yellow macaw and a white dove.

The initiative will also help in popularizing zoos adoption scheme.

Pleasant surprises greet moms on Mothers Day

LUCKNOW: The first thing that Dipali came across when she woke up on Sunday was a bunch of wilted flowers that her 12-year-old son, Uddhav and 10-year-old daughter, Gauri, had kept under her bed late on Saturday night when she was fast asleep. The duo also bought some chocolates, wrapped them up and kept it in the refrigerator. And to give a surprise, they didnt let their mom touch the refrigerator the entire Saturday. It was touching. Their gesture coaxed me to think that I should also plan something for my parents, said Dipali.

For Poonam Tandon, a professor at Lucknow University, her 10-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son gifted her a greeting card that the kids designed themselves. The first thing I get in the morning is the card. A small piece of paper carried their emotions, said Poonam. To thank her kids, Poonam took them out for a dinner. The kids made my day. It was a beautiful feeling when all three of us hugged each other, she said.

Missing her daughter and daughter-in law, Pratibha Tyagi, a housewife, was as excited as a young kid desperately waiting for her birthday cake. She woke up early in the morning after her phone rang repeatedly. It was my daughter-in-law who resides in Mumbai. She wanted to be the first one to wish me, said Pratibha smiling. Recalling yester-years, when people hardly knew about mothers day, Pratibha shared that times have changed a lot. Now, people go gaga over it. From special cakes in the bakeries to surprises of all kinds, mothers are taken special care on this day, she said.

A mammas boy, Parth Arora, a student avoided all that which annoyed his mom. Sharing as to how he made her mom feel special, Parth said, Usually, I wake her up, while she is sleeping in the morning asking her to give me something to eat. But on Mothers day, I let her sleep till she woke up on her own. I brought samosas from the place she likes and we had breakfast together. This act by Parth gave his family members a pleasant shock.

Shreya, who lives with her in-laws in Delhi had tears in her eyes while expressing her love and affection for her mom. I really missed her today. But my mother-in-law really supported me and together we went out for a dinner, she said.

Mother’s Day: Vishy & mum walk down memory lane

Viswanathan Anand has done what few sports-persons in India have achieved: he’s captured the hearts of millions of cricket-crazy Indians by playing an excellent game of chess.

Today, the world chess champion has only seconds (assistants), but his first and most important coach was his mother, Susheela. Thirty-five years ago, it was Susheela who taught him the moves.

“He was not restless, but he was certainly impatient,” recalls Susheela of her early mentoring years. “While playing chess, he would make a move, but was unable to wait for the opponent to play his move. He wanted to make the second move immediately. Occasionally, I would tell him to study the board carefully. But perhaps he could see more than I could, even as child,” says the proud mother.

Susheela has never played competitive chess, but there was a nice little tribute from a chess lover sometime back who said that she would have easily become a Grandmaster herself, if she had taken the game seriously. The ‘if’ is a big hypothetical uncertainty; Susheela is happy playing her role as mother, mentor and guide to perfection.

Her contribution to Anand’s success is legendary, and she found the perfect foil in her daughter-in-law Aruna to continue the same work that she had put in while defining the progress of her son.

Mother and son share an easy relationship. Anand still talks of his mother as though he is a child roaming in the family garden, waiting for her to pamper him. “She’s always been there for me,” he says. Those few words explain it all — the months spent on the road participating in tournaments, the “treats” they enjoyed after every win. “We travelled all over India and abroad during my junior years, and became good friends.

She would give me an Archie comic or a Tintin every time I won. I remember playing in Delhi and after every win we would run for an ice-cream or kulfi,” he says.

But underlining this nostalgic picture is a young mother and her son determined to be the best. “Even in Manila, she would create puzzles for me, so that I could solve them after school,” he says.

“The initial years were tough and we would have to stay with relatives and friends whenever we were abroad. We would save up money and then go out for a meal.” But Anand’s favourite home-cooked food is spinach sambar, lime rasam and potato curry.

The adjectives that define a young Anand — active and impatient — contradict the very nature of the game that he is master of. Sitting patiently over a board was not his forte. “His impatience is not limited to chess alone. It was the same with tennis” laughs Susheela, “but he was always easy to handle.”

Anand recalls instances when his mother would deprive him of his Walkman (this was the time before the iPod revolution) when “I became too difficult to handle”.

Born in Chennai on December 11, 1969 to Viswanathan (a retired general manager, Southern Railways), and Susheela, Anand grew up with his older brother and sister in a household that encouraged extra-curricular activities.
