Synopsis

It is ironical that Champagne is among the least understood types of wines despite the fact it is the probably the most famous and certainly one of the most popular wines in the world throughout history. Things get even vaguer when one exits the city limits of Champagne to explore the many fine Sparkling wines elsewhere in France, Italy and Spain. In fact, sparklers are produced practically everywhere that dry wine is produced, from California to Chile, Argentina to Australia, Germany to India.

This event starts off with a 45-minute review on various aspects of sparkling wine, including how it is produced, the different styles that many of us are likely to encounter and other topics that will help us to appreciate sparkling wine.

Morales seeks funds for slope protection

MABALACAT CITY — The city government here urged the national government, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and the Clark Development Corporation to provide funding for slope protection projects along major tributaries.
Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales said thousands of families are in constant danger of being engulfed by rushing floodwaters coming from the Clark Freeport Zone.
“To avoid lateral erosions, we have to strengthen the banks of the creek in Barangays Quitangil, Sapang Balen, Camachiles and Lakandula,” Morales said.
The slope protection of the creek in said villages had eroded through time and badly needs reinforcement.
The heavy monsoon rains eroded the slope protection barriers, Morales added.
“In the event that the floodwaters coming from the Clark Freeport Zone breach the slope protection, thousands of families will be displaced,” Morales said.
“Habang maaga pa po, ako ay nanawagan sa mga kinauukulan ng Clark Development Corporation at BCDA na magbigay ng tulong para sa slope protection projects,” the city mayor said.

DOT-3 warns public of tourist pedophile

ANGELES CITY–The Department of Tourism in Central Luzon (DOT-3) has warned the public about “child-sex tourists,” or tourists who abuse children.
The warning came after the Angeles City Police Office (ACPO) arrested Steven Wolf, an American national, last week.
Wolf was arrested after allegedly abusing two elementary students from Barangay Balibago.
“If you find a child-sex tourist, don’t turn him away; turn him in,” the DOT-3 said in a statement.
The warning came as part of DOT-3’s Child Wise Tourism campaign.
The campaign also includes the conduct of awareness seminars on the subject of Child Wise Tourism and prevention of abuse against children in places visited by foreign nationals like Boracay, Cebu and Baguio City in an effort to “rid the industry of these criminal elements with psychological disorder.”
Child Wise is a global network of organizations and individuals working together to eliminate child prostitution, child pornography and trafficking of children for sexual purposes. Capitol fetes outgoing officials

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The provincial government, through the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, yesterday honored outgoing officials led by Vice Governor and First District congressman-elect Joseller “Yeng” Guiao.
During Monday’s flag-raising ceremonies, Guiao, Second District Board Member Olga Frances David-Dizon, Ex-Officio Board Member Krizzanel Garbo and Third District Board Member Monina Laus were given certifications.
Represented by colleagues in the Provincial Board were Third District Board Members Rolly Macalino and Trina Dizon and Second District Board Member Teresito Lingad.
SP Secretary Luis Rivera disclosed that the SP–then presided by acting Vice Governor Cris Garbo–had recently unanimously passed a resolution citing Guiao for his “political conviction” and “utmost dedication” in pushing for good governance.
Rivera, provincial officials and workers attended Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at the Capitol and the simple ceremonies for the outgoing SP members. The event coincided with the 50th birthday of provincial administrator Atty. Andres “Jun” Pangilinan.
The officials thanked Governor Lilia Pineda, provincial government employees and their constituents for the support, and said they are not bidding goodbye but will continue to serve Pampanga in their private capacities.
Guiao, who presided over the SP’s last session, said: “I am not leaving Pampanga but just expanding my services as your representative to Congress. I will continue to coordinate with Capitol on beneficial programs for Kapampangans just like I did in my term as vice-governor for three past governors. I have no regrets and if I were to do it again, I would return to Capitol.”
Guiao worked with four governors, including incumbent Pineda, in his 12 years stint at the Capitol. He won as member of the SP in 2001 and later became vice governor for three straight terms.
Having completed his three straight terms as vice governor, Guiao ran for First District congressman and he won.
In his speech, Guiao said there were “conflicts ” with three governors he had worked with but he will not hesitate to do the same things if given the same situation as when he was vice governor and board member during the stints of former governor and now Sen. Manuel “Lito” Lapid (1995 to 2004), former Gov. Mark Lapid (2007 to 2010) and former priest-turned-governor Eddie Panlilio.
Guiao described as “fruitful years” his working experience with Pineda, who was not able to attend Monday’s ceremony due to flu. He said there was “harmonious relationships with Pineda allowing the quick and effective delivery of basic services.”
Guiao stood his ground after he exposed the alleged anomaly in the collection of quarry income during the stints of Lapid and his son, Mark.
“We are collecting an average of P1 million daily now under Pineda compared to a total of P10 million collected once in one year,” said Guiao, referring to the administrations of the Lapids.
Art Punzalan, head of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), disclosed that they are set to collect “about” P800 million when the first term of Gov. Pineda ends on June 30. Then Gov. Eddie Panlilio’s highest collection in one year was P606 million, said Punzalan.

Student arrested for gun violation

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A 20-year old student was caught carrying a gun in a checkpoint in Cabanatuan City on Wednesday.
The suspect was identified as Ramon Pili, Jr., a resident of Marcos Farm, Barangay Bakod Bayan, Cabanatuan City.
Police said Pili was aboard a motorcycle without a plate number when he was flagged down by authorities manning a checkpoint around 8:45 p.m. in Barangay Bakod Bayan.
During the questioning, Pili admitted having in his possession a cal.
38 revolver which he handed to the police.
But the suspect cannot present license and permit to carry a firearm outside residence, police said.
Pili and the confiscated items were brought to the police station for investigation and proper disposition.
The suspect will be charged with “Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunition.” ●Froilan E. Magto

‘Akyat Bahay’ rampant in 2nd district

FLORIDABLANCA, Pampanga–Residents in the Second District, particularly here and in Lubao town, are alarmed with the rampant incidents of “Akyat Bahay.”
A resident in Barangay San Roque here, over the weekend, reported to police that Akyat Bahay members were able to enter their home but failed to take anything of value.
According to the resident who only identified her name as “Aika”, she heard noises during a heavy downpour over the weekend which prompted her to check their house. She discovered that Akyat Bahay members forcibly gained entry thru a window of one of their rooms.
She immediately reported the incident to police authorities who said the suspects were not able to take anything because their supposed victim was still awake.
Meanwhile, a same incident was reported few houses away. The suspects were also not able to take anything, police said.
Police said the Akyat Bahay members strike during heavy downpour and that they probably use minors in their operations.
With this, the police are urging residents to be vigilant specifically this rainy season, and make sure that all their doors and windows are locked and secured before retiring for the night. ●Marna Dagumboy-del Rosario

3 for drugs in Angeles, F’blanca

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–Two separate police drug buy-bust operations netted on Tuesday and Wednesday three drug pushers in Angeles City and Floridablanca in Pampanga.
Police said arrested on Wednesday in Angeles City were Marissa Lising, alias May, 44, a resident of Barangay Pampang, Angeles City and Michael Bonifacio, 35, of Barangay Balibago, also in Angeles City.
Police said Lising and Bonifacio sold shabu to police poseur buyer at about 5 p.m. in a house at Michael Street Diamond Subdivision, in Angeles City.
Confiscated from them were a small-size heat-sealed plastic sachet containing shabu and the marked money.
The suspects were brought to the police station for proper disposition.
In Floridablanca, arrested was Allein Bernando, 29, of Barangay Poblacion, about 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday.
Seized from Bernando were two plastic sachets containing shabu and marked money.
Police said the operation against Bernando was witnessed by the barangay captain of San Isidro, Floridablanca, representatives from the media and Department of Justice.
The suspect was first brought to the Floridablanca Police Station for investigation and later to this camp for examination. ●Froilan E. Magtoto
