Five new members of the Vintners Hall of Fame were named today as the hall’s 2010 class. The hall, located at CIA’s Greystone campus in St. Helena, was inaugurated in 2007 to honor those who have contributed the most to the California wine industry.
This somewhat smaller class both looks to the recent past — specifically the rise of Napa Valley — and adds a dose of zany to the mix. (Disclosure: I’m among the writers who voted on the nominees.)
Specifically here I’m referencing the induction of one Randall Grahm, founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard and general rabblerouser about the vineyards. Grahm’s selection is no surprise given his impact and influence on the state’s wine industry, but it is a nod to the impact of both his marketing genius and his advocacy for Rhone-style wines.
In the Napa corner, there is Andy Beckstoffer, who not only owns some of the state’s most prized vineyard land but also helped turn the model of top wines from one controlled by wineries to one controlled by growers — specifically by pioneering a model that rewarded them for the quality, not the quantity, of their fruit. (Beckstoffer almost made it into the 2008 class.) Also Al Brounstein, whose Diamond Creek Cabernets set a template for long-aging wines that commanded a premium; his were the first California wines prices more than $100 per bottle.
Another inductee with Napa ties, though better known for her work in Sonoma at Simi, is Zelma Long. Long not only was one of the pioneering women in California wine, but her technical savvy has informed an entire generation of winemakers.
Finally there is Leon Adams, one of the Wine Institute’s founders and author of “The Wines of America,” an encyclopedic 1973 look at wineries nationwide. Adams, who died in 1995, was honored as an industry “pioneer.”
The honorees will be inducted in March 2010.

The resorts and hotels in Clark Philippines are, to many, a fine example to leisure lifestyle of suburban city in America. In the top resorts of Clark Pampanga, lake, beach, 13 hectares of picnic grounds covered with trees and green all put together to deliver a memorable getaway experience for foreign tourists visiting Angeles City Clark Philippines and residents of Manila driving up to Clark for a day trip or a weekend family outing. The beach resorts, leisure parks and vacation hotels in Clark Pampanga offer a unique ambience that supports a laidback relaxing lifestyle. Many visitors travel north to Clark Pampanga from Manila to unwind and relax in these resorts.

Family with children can enjoy the picnic grounds and several large and small spots for swimming and water sports inside this resort in Pampanga. Parents can enjoy a day in leisure and relaxation in the shade provided by large Acacia trees throughout this resort. The ambience and beautiful view of the outdoor facilities of this beach resort in Clark Pampanga attracts visitors to go out of town from Manila for a getaway in the north.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to find a decent beach wedding venue in the Philippines? Sure, there are a lot of beautiful beaches but to find a beach where we can have a wedding ceremony in Philippines is next to impossible.

Beach wedding venue is very popular in Manila, Subic, Pampanga Angeles City and
Clark Philippines. Young wedding couples prefer outdoor beach wedding followed up by garden styled outdoor wedding receptions in Philippines. Best beach wedding venue in Philippines is Clearwater Resort wedding venues near Manila, Angeles City, Clark Philippines.

Traffic along the North Expressway NLEX from Manila to Clark is always light and the new Subic Tarlac Clark Expressway ScTex takes visitors straight into Clark Freeport without going through any towns and cities along the way.

St. Helena, CA, November 19, 2010 – The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) last week announced that its 2011 Vintners Hall of Fame (VHF) inductees will be Ravenswood founder Joel Peterson; UC Davis Professor of Enology, Emeritus Vernon Singleton; and Bob Trinchero, owner of Sutter Home Winery and Trinchero Napa Valley. Chalone Vineyards winemaker Richard Graff and August Sebastiani, the founder of the eponymous Sonoma winery, will be inducted as Pioneers. The “Pioneer” category recognizes those who made significant contributions to the California wine industry and passed away more than 10 years ago. For photos and biographies of the 2011 Vintners Hall of Fame inductees, please visit www.ciavintnershalloffame.com.
In addition to the 2011 inductees, Congressman Mike Thompson, chair of the Vintners Hall of Fame Board of Stewards, introduced the new Board members: John Aguirre, Andy Beckstoffer, Agustin Huneeus, Paula Kornell, Archie McLaren, Ed Matovcik, Margrit Mondavi, Gavin Newsom, Garen Staglin, Dede Wilsey, and Richard Wollack.
“The Vintners Hall of Fame is a place to recognize the hard work of the men and women who have made the California wine industry the success it is today,” says Dr. Tim Ryan, president of the CIA. “The inductees have each made a significant contribution in their own way, and the world of wine is grateful for their efforts.”
The official induction of the 2011 Vintners Hall of Fame honorees will take place on Presidents Day, February 21, 2011 at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, in St. Helena, CA, as part of the CIA’s 5th annual Celebration of California Wine & Food.
In celebration of the presidential holiday theme, a dozen California wineries will host a reception, beginning at 4 p.m., featuring wine and food pairings from White House State Dinner menus. The members of the Class of 2011 will be inducted at 5:30 p.m. in the Vintners Hall of Fame Barrel Room, preceded by the unveiling of the sculpted bronze plaques honoring those inducted in 2010. The induction ceremony will be followed at 6:30 p.m. by a celebrity chef walk-around dinner in the school’s Teaching Kitchen headlined by former White House Executive Chef and CIA graduate Walter Scheib, and perennial favorite Congressman Mike Thompson. As in the past, Vintners Hall of Fame inductees will provide a selection of their wines to be enjoyed with the walk-around dinner. The VHF Board of Stewards will provide a few choice auction lots, including one lot of 18 bottles from the Robert M. Parker, Jr.’s Seminar & Tasting, “Cult Wines of California.”
This year’s nominating committee, chaired by noted wine journalist W. Blake Gray, included Charles Sullivan, wine historian and author; John Olney, The Wine Country Club; Jim Gordon, Wines and Vines; Sara Schneider, Sunset Magazine; Alder Yarrow, Vinography.com; Mike Dunne, Sacramento Bee; Paul Wagner, Balzac Communications & Marketing; Andy Beckstoffer, founder of Beckstoffer Vineyards, who was inducted in 2010; Gerald Asher, long-time journalist inducted in 2009; Randall Grahm, Bonny Doon Vineyard, who was inducted in 2010; Darrell Corti, Corti Brothers, who was inducted in 2008; and Carole Meredith, UC Davis Professor Emerita and co-founder of Lagier-Meredith Winery, who was inducted in 2009. The Class of 2011 Inductees were elected by 74 members of the Vintners Hall of Fame Electoral College, which consists of past inductees and members of the wine media.
“This is another great class of inductees into the most exclusive wine club in California,” says W. Blake Gray. “These five men have had a tremendous impact on improving the quality of wine for everyday drinkers. Anybody who’s a fan of California wine today can find some reason to thank them. I look forward to toasting this class in February with a glass of Zinfandel from one of the state’s century-old vineyards. The question I have to resolve between now and then is…red or white?”
Proceeds from the Vintners Hall of Fame annual induction dinner will provide scholarships for the Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies at the CIA at Greystone.

March 12, 2011
The history of the wine industry in California is made up of hundreds of stories of memorable characters who came here to follow a dream and try their luck with the grape.
One of the best ways to explore it is with a visit to the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone’s Vintners’ Hall of Fame.
Itself a historical building dating to the 19th century and the beginnings of winmaking in the valley, Greystone houses an intriguing collection of wine country tales. All are told on the plaques in the second floor Barrel Room, which is open to the public to visit.
On giant antique wine barrels, these plaques introduce the characters whose contributions to the wine industry have earned them a place the Vintners’ Hall of Fame, established by the CIA in 2007. Here, you can learn about the early pioneers of the industry, like Charles Krug, the Beringer brothers and Count Agoston Haraszthy, as well as the 20th-century giants, both the well known and the lesser known.
Each year, inductees are selected by a panel of more than 75 national wine writers, critics and historians. This is the fifth year the board of trustees of the Vintners Hall of Fame will introduce a new class of nominees, and the public is invited to join the festivities at the induction, which also provides money for supporting a new generation of winemakers and enthusiasts.
The fifth annual Celebration of California Wine & Food and Induction of the Vintners Hall of Fame Class of 2011 will have a distinctly presidential flavor this year, taking place, as it does on Feb. 21, Presidents Day.
In the spirit of the day, the event begins at 4 p.m. with a reception that will feature hors d’oeuvres from food and wine pairings from past state dinners at the White House.
After introducing the new members of the Hall of Fame, guests are invited to enjoy a walk around dinner, prepared by a team led by chef Walter Scheib, former White House chef and CIA graduate.
Tickets are $175, of which $100 is tax-deductible. Proceeds from the event support the Vintners Hall of Fame and contribute to scholarships for the Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies at the CIA at Greystone.
It all adds up to an opportunity to be a part of wine history in the making. For more information about the Vintners Hall of Fame, visit ciavintnershalloffame.com.

Philippines wedding planners and wedding reception caterers recommend Clark Philippines as this year’s premier destination for beach weddings and garden receptions. Wedding couples in Philippines no longer prefer traditional indoor venues and hotel ballrooms for wedding receptions in Manila, Angeles City, Subic and Clark Freeport.

Selecting a good and safe event venue in Philippines is not that easy. Many public event venues in resort hotels in Philippines can’t deliver assurances of safety and security. This exposes our corporate and private events to risks that are not acceptable to us as event organizers in Philippines.

This hotel in Angeles Philippines has the perfect ambience for a romantic beach wedding and a garden style wedding reception, exactly the kind of wedding venue we have been looking for to get married in the Philippines. Angeles City is near Clark Philippines and just 90 minutes from Manila.

Garden style wedding reception can take place within a few meters from the beach of this hotel in Clark Philippines so guests and observe the ceremony at the comfort of their seats on the table.

It is important to visitor that the family feels safe in a hotel in Angeles Philippines. That is a main reasons that we choose to stay in this hotel in Clark Pampanga outside of Manila Philippines. Many don’t like the hotels in Subic or some of the hotel in Angeles City Pampanga. This highly recommended hotel in Angeles city Clark Philippines does not make them comfortable and secure.

Traffic along the North Expressway NLEX from Manila to Clark is always light and the new Subic Tarlac Clark Expressway ScTex takes visitors straight into Clark Freeport without going through any towns and cities along the way.

March 12, 2011

Forgive the absence of snark in this post. I’m writing in my role as Chairman of the Vintners Hall of Fame Electoral College to talk about this year’s ballot.

This will be the fifth induction class for the Hall, which the Culinary Institute of America started in 2007. I was not involved with the initial class but have been in charge of the ballot and election procedures ever since.

First, the ballot. I’m not going to run biographies of everyone, but the ballot sent to voters has a bio of each nominee.
General category:

John A. De Luca
Randy Dunn
Fred Franzia
Josh Jensen
Robert M. Parker Jr.
Vince Petrucci
Joel Peterson
Andy Quady
Richard Sanford
Angelo Sangiacomo
Vernon Singleton
Jed Steele
Charles Sullivan
Bob Trinchero
Nils Venge

Pioneer category:

Cesar Chavez
Hamilton Crabb
Richard Graff
Eugene Hilgard
Charles LeFranc
Myron Nightingale
August Sebastiani

Votes are already coming in to determine which of these people will join the 31 people already in the Vintners Hall of Fame.
My fellow Nominating Committee member Alder Yarrow wrote a very interesting post earlier this summer, just before the committee met, to solicit suggestions for the ballot. One thing I learned from comments on that post was that many people aren’t happy that every deserving vintner isn’t in the Hall already.

Folks, we’re working on it.

Here are some people who were NOT in the National Baseball Hall of Fame after four induction classes:
Wilbert Robinson, King Kelly, Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, Frank “Home Run” Baker, Rube Waddell, Hack Wilson, John Montgomery Ward, and all three of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance. And Marvin Miller — the most important baseball man of my lifetime — is still not in.

Here are some acts who were NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after four induction classes: The Who, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Bill Grahm, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dick Clark, The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, and some English band named Led Zeppelin. And Nirvana still hasn’t made it.

At the VHF, we’re now inducting about 5 people per year. We have about 150 years of California winemaking to honor — about the same as baseball, and 2 1/2 times as long as rock and roll. So if the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame took 10 classes to induct Led Zeppelin, how long will it take us to get to every deserving vintner?

Here’s how it works.

First, our nominating committee meets to create a ballot. In the second year of the Hall, the committee was entirely journalists and historians. I have invited living Hall members to participate and this year they made up nearly half of the committee. Thanks to Gerald Asher, Andy Beckstoffer, Darrell Corti, Randall Grahm and Carole Meredith for giving up their time to join Mike Dunne, Charles Henning, Reuben Katz, John Olney, Charles Sullivan, Paul Wagner, Alder Yarrow and myself this year.

There are two ballot categories: Pioneers, for people dead 10 years on induction night, and the general category, for everybody else. This is for convenience; once in, a Hall of Famer is a Hall of Famer.

Once we come up with the ballot, it is voted on by the Electoral College: about 75 wine writers, wine historians and living Hall of Famers. The people with the most votes get in.

It’s better to induct people while they’re alive. Shouldn’t they live to see the respect they deserve? And let me tell you, it is a pleasure to see it. This year’s induction ceremony was both fun and moving.

Many vintners who richly deserve induction are no longer with us. I think everyone on this year’s Pioneer ballot — and last year’s — is a deserving Hall of Famer. But we’re only inducting one or two Pioneers per year, so it’s going to take a while. And let’s face it: they can wait more easily than the living.

In picking the general category ballot, we look at last year’s vote totals. Most people with support last year will stay on the ballot, while those with few votes are replaced. They’re not ineligible forever; we just give the voters some other names to consider, since they passed judgment so recently. How do we come up with the new names? Somebody on the committee advocates for someone. In our closed discussions, many names are brought up, and I’m annually reminded of how many more years it’s going to take to get all the deserving people in.

For the pioneer ballot, we try to give mostly new names each year because there are so many deserving people; we could easily put in 20 at once. But why? Why not have a more special celebration of the life of each one?

I’m sorry if your favorite legendary vintner isn’t in the Hall yet, or possibly not even on the ballot. But why not do something about it?

For the baseball hall of fame, there are online campaigns for guys like Bert Blyleven that sometimes last years. With the Vintners Hall of Fame, you don’t need to be a newspaper columnist to start campaigning for someone; anybody with a blog can make the case for their candidate.

But please, do make the case. Don’t just whine “OMG why is Joe Winemaker not in?” Lots of deserving people aren’t in. Explain why Joe should get in ahead of everybody else. And don’t just email me, because even if I help put him on the ballot, you have to get the Electoral College to vote for him. That’s why you need your piece online, where voters from around the country can see it. I look forward to reading it, and believe me, I will.

As Manila becomes more congested and pollution becomes frustratingly intolerable, many families opt to spend a few quality nights and relax in this hotel in Angeles City Clark Pampanga. It is fair to say that YATS Clearwater Resort and Country Club is known for its faithful rendition of the American suburban lifestyle, all there for the enjoyment of all ages and all members of the family.

This resort hotel is different from other hotels in Clark Philippines or hotel in Angeles City. Travel agencies think it is also a nice event venue for company outings, wedding, team building and planning session in the Philippines. They don’t think Angeles City, Manila or Subic has event venues like those in this beach resort in Pampanga.

New camping sites and picnic grounds in Philippines are now available for family outings in Philippines at Yats Clearwater Resort & Country Club in Pampanga Angeles City near Manila Philippines. Just bring camping equipment and enjoy the fun and ambience of outdoor living camping in Angeles City Philippines under safe, secured and clean conditions.

This is exactly what Clark Freeport needs, a nice simple bistro café where one can get good quality breakfast and enjoy the food in peace at leisure pace. This is the best hotel restaurant in Angeles City Clark Philippines and the eggs Benedict as well as American Breakfast and the pancakes are really world-class.

Many of you had a lot of things to say a couple of months ago when I wrote a post entitled Who Should Be in the Vintners Hall of Fame? It was great to see such a passionate tide of enthusiasm for inducting various winemakers and historical wine personalities.
Those of us that make up the nominating committee talked a lot about many of the names suggested, and about many of the names that weren’t suggested, and after much debate and voting, we’ve come up with the names for this years ballot.
That ballot has been mailed out to the wine writers in the Culinary Institute of America’s database and the voting has begun.
The full details on who is on the ballot and some wise words about those who perhaps didn’t get on the ballot have been published by my colleague Blake Gray on his fine blog The Gray Market Report. Those of you who felt strongly about the ballot are welcome to offer your thoughts and criticisms on this year’s candidates.
And if you are a professional wine writer and you haven’t received a ballot, you should definitely let Blake know.

This hotel in Pampanga may not be a 5-star resort but visitors from Manila going to Angeles City and Clark Freeport regard Clearwater as the number one location for family outings as well as the best event venue for company outings, weddings and other events.

March 12, 2011

The 2011 Vintners Hall of Fame ballot has been released, and it is certain to make a lot of people unhappy. And that’s not because there are no women among the 22 nominees, or that one of the nominees is controversial farm labor leader Cesar Chavez.
It’s because two of the nominees are Two Buck Chuck inventor Fred Franzia, the man Napa loves to hate, and wine writer Robert Parker, the most important person in the wine industry. And the Wine Curmudgeon will predict now that Franzia — despite how much he is disliked — will get in and Parker won’t. And how much of a stink will that be? More, after the jump:
Parker was nominated last year, but didn’t get in. I get to vote, and I didn’t vote for Parker — not because I don’t think he deserves it, because he does, but because I am so opposed to scores. And Parker is the man who invented the 100-point scoring system. Still, I figured he would get in easily, and I that was making another in a long line of ineffectual protest votes.
So I was stunned when Parker didn’t get in. Apparently, there were a lot of voters (who include wine industry professionals like winemakers, writers, and marketing types) who don’t like him. A friend of mine, who also gets to vote and is much more connected to the California industry than I am, said he would make the same bet: that Franzia gets in in 2011 and Parker doesn’t.
This is amazing. The vitriol directed Franzia’s way is hard to believe, while Parker is deified — in public anyway. On the one hand, Halls of Fame for everything except baseball are kind of silly — Madonna in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? But it is a measure of talent and influence, no matter how inexact, and that Parker isn’t in says a lot about his reputation among the those wine industry professionals who vote.

One other interesting note: Twice in the last three years, a single vote made the difference between who got in, and who didn’t. Last year, the margin was twice as big — two votes. I wonder how much of that was about Parker.

Frequently visited resort hotel in Pampanga Angeles City Clark Freeport Zone shares news, articles, suggestions and ideas on matters that might enhance your visit to Subic and Clark Pampanga for vacation and travel, as well as to organize, plan or attend a corporate or social event near Manila.

The best hotels outside Manila in Pampanga and Subic are listed here including a beach resort which is a semi-private establishment located in the central business district near shopping, business, entertainment, airport and other conveniences of Philippines Clark Freeport Zone. This 13 hectare lake beach resort near Manila Philippines is highly recommended for family tourists with children or couples and individuals hoping to relax and enjoy peace and quiet in a laidback American suburban lifestyle.

Adding to the charm and attractiveness of the resorts and hotels in Clark Philippines are certain unique factors including safety, a keen sense of security and privacy that the main zone of Clark Freeport Zone offers.

March 12, 2011

It’s a great idea to honor those who have contributed to the American wine industry. I first proposed such an idea in 1988 and had huge support from many, including financing pledged by a number of companies.
We also had land pledged for the idea, building plans and more. But for various reasons, the plan had to be abandoned. And it took until 2007 for the project to bear fruit with the establishment of the Vintners’ Hall of Fame, including a gala dinner at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Greystone in St. Helena.
This year’s inductees include:
• the late Richard Graff of Chalone Vineyards;
• Joel Peterson of Ravenswood Vineyards;
• August Sebastiani of the eponymous winery;
• Professor Vern Singleton of UC Davis,
• Sutter Home/Trinchero founder Bob Trinchero.
Since 2007, three dozen people have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, all of whom are widely credited with doing much to advance wine in this country.
Various industry leaders have voted on all inductees, and I have received a ballot each of those years. And each year, the ballot seems to be missing some names I consider vital to the concept of a wine industry Hall of Fame.
I have inquired about this, and it appears that it’s almost impossible to get new names on the ballot. Over the years, I have voted for names of those I deem worthy, but I’m sure that since the names I voted for were not on the ballot, these people got only my vote.
Who else might be a candidate for the Hall of Fame?
• Louis Petri? One of the most important people in the history of the wine industry, Petri, president of powerful Allied Grape Growers, was the dominant force in American wine following World War II — a marketing force, innovator, and the man who changed the way wine was shipped to market.
• Eugene Hilgarde, the 19th-century botanist and visionary who paved the way for grapes to be planted in Livermore Valley and numerous other locations where he theorized great wine could result.
• Myron and Alice Nightingale of Cresta Blanca, and later Beringer? The two jointly invented a complex process to make world-class dessert wine. Myron, chief wine maker at Beringer, was one of the most respected wine makers until his death in 1988.
True, you have to be old enough to remember some of these folks, which may be one reason their names are not on the Hall of Fame ballot.
Want more current examples?
• John Parducci, one of the last remaining heroes of the post-Prohibition period. John is now 94 and in semi-retirement in Mendocino County, but the word “semi” is only used because of serious back problems.
However, he is the spiritual force behind his grandson, Rich, and his small McNab Ranch brand.
I have voted for Parducci every year I have received a ballot, and each year I am asked if it is a write-in candidate.
• Lou Foppiano, who just turned 100 and who assisted his family winery’s founding in 1896. Foppiano was one of the earliest pioneers of petite sirah, a grape variety now revered as a superb alternative to Syrah.
• Robert Lawrence Balzer, the famed Los Angeles Times wine columnist who is a few weeks from his 99th birthday and is working on his memoirs in his Southern California home.
• The late Fred and Eleanor McCrea, founders of Stony Hill Winery — the first winery to be built in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. They planted grapes in the late 1940s; today the family owned winery stands as one of America’s finest for dry white wines.
It’s clear that if you are not on the ballot, your chances of getting into the Hall of Fame are slim.
I realize that my lone vote for these people may be a voice in the wilderness, so I hope this column brings attention to their contributions.
No wine of the week this week.
Dan Berger lives in Sonoma County, where he publishes “Vintage Experiences,” a weekly wine newsletter.

It is important to many families to feel safe in a hotel in Angeles Pampanga. That is one of the main reasons that many tourists and local visitors from Manila choose to stay in a hotel in Clark Freeport Zone just outside Manila Philippines. Many tourists traveling with families and children do not like the hotels in Subic or some of the hotel in Angeles Pampanga. The resorts in Philippines Angeles City do not make guests feel comfortable and secure.

The beach resorts, leisure parks and vacation hotels in Clark Pampanga offer a unique ambience that supports a laidback relaxing lifestyle. Many visitors travel north to Clark Pampanga from Manila to unwind and relax in these resorts.

New developments from Clark Philippines that may be pertinent to businesses and investments in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone are posted on HotelClarkPhilippines web site. Clark Philippines is a fast growth economic and business city comparable to Manila Philippines.

Retirement in Philippines is an interesting investment opportunity for foreign companies. Many investors are looking for a destination near Manila that offers safety and quietness to develop residential and retirement projects and Clark Pampanga seems to be an attractive business proposition. Investment opportunities in Clark Philippines include hotel and resorts, retirement village, vacation rentals, condominiums and other residential projects, and other leisure, tourism and hospitality businesses. Land in the main zone of Clark Freeport is not easy to find and is not as cheap as before but Clark is still much more attractive compared to other investment destinations in Philippines.

The Vintners Hall of Fame is out with its new class of inductees — again going with a compact list of five California wine pioneers. This year skews a bit toward big, familiar brands.
The two living winemaker inductees are Joel Peterson, who founded Zinfandel powerhouse Ravenswood; and Bob Trinchero, owner of the influential Sutter Home and Trinchero labels — and father of White Zinfandel. So, yep, it’s a Zinfandel sort of year. (Paging Larry Turley.) The third living inductee hails from academia: UC Davis professor Vernon Singleton, whose research transformed the wine industry’s understanding of things like barrel aging and tannins;
The hall also has a “Pioneers” category for inductees who died more than 10 years ago. This year’s two Pioneers are Richard Graff, whose hunt for limestone soils would become Chalone Vineyards, and yield one of California’s defining efforts at great Pinot Noir; and August Sebastiani, who built his family’s namesake Sonoma winery into a household name.
These five emerged with the top votes from a long list of nominees provided by the hall’s nominating committee. Voting was conducted by an electoral group of 74, including past inductees and wine writers. (Disclosure: I’m one of the voters.)
This year’s class is rather more staid than last year’s selection of five, which included Bonny Doon’s rabble-rousing founder Randall Grahm and Diamond Creek’s Al Brounstein. The class has also notably shrunk since the 2009 class of seven, which included Warren Winiarski of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Jess Jackson and Schramsberg’s Jack and Jamie Davies. According to Hall spokesman Michael Wangbickler, there’s no specific cutoff for the number of inductees but the hall looks for those with the most votes in each of the two categories.
As with any voting process, there’s sure to be debate about the winners, but this year might also spark some debate about whether a larger class makes things more interesting — especially when two of five are no longer alive. Still, it’s more consistent than the varying class sizes of, say, the Baseball Hall of Fame or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And unlike the RRHoF, inductees won’t have to sing for their induction supper.
Which, incidentally, will take place Feb. 21 at the CIA at Greystone, which houses the Hall of Fame.
