Now that I am a mom, I get to enjoy Mother’s Day as the honoree. It is a day when I can truly reflect on how fortunate I am to be the mother of 3 beautiful, healthy children. They, in turn, make me feel like a Queen for a day. I wish I could say that I have always understood what an important day this is for moms. Unfortunately, though I have always loved and appreciated my own mother, it was not until I cleaned caked-on food out of the dining chair seat cushion, pee pee out of the car seat, and throw up out of the carpet that I could start to grasp the relevance of this day. It was not until I experienced what was to become an ordinary day consisting of a wake time of 6 a.m., breakfast, dishes, laundry, bus stop, snacks, playdate, grocery shopping, lunch, naptime (thank goodness!), snacks, bus stop, dinner preparation, dishes, homework, bedtime routines, and shear exhaustion, that I realized the enormity and responsibility of the duties of a mom. Not until I became intimately familiar with the thrill of soft, chubby arms grasped tightly around my neck or utter delight in the sound of all of my children playing cooperatively in the next room or the raw power of an unprompted “I love you, Mommy,” when it comes from a high-pitched, sing-song voice behind me as I drive in the car did I begin to understand the complex relationship of a mother and her child(ren).

This day is not just a day to be honored for all that we as moms do for our families and our communities, but it is a day for moms to meditate on this gift that we have been given: the task of loving, nurturing, educating, and training our children for their place in the world as adults. Who I am as a mom is in large part because of my mom’s influence, and someday my children will come to understand that their mom helped shape who they are as parents.

I can’t think of a more difficult job than being a Mother. When we’re growing up, we take so many things for granted…and that includes our Moms. It’s a simple fact and it’s just human nature. We don’t understand the full concept of being a Mother until we actually are one.

What I wouldn’t do to be able to pamper my Mom this Mother’s day. We lost her to breast cancer and I would give anything to just be able to be with her for five minutes.

But…if I had the chance to have her for a whole day, these are the things I would do for that one day.

1. Take her to dinner
2. Make her a homemade gift, maybe a scrapbook.
3. Take her to get her hair and nails done
4. Fix her breakfast in bed

6. Take her to a movie

A true mother thinks day and night about the well-being of her children. She is the first to praise them and to comfort them, and also the first to protect them when she senses that they may be in danger. It is she who has carried them and borne the pains of pregnancy and childbirth, and it is she who now continues to carry them in her heart. Her intuition is often clearer than her husband’s, and she will not let him make light of her concerns or reassure her too easily. She will also be the first to turn to God on a child’s behalf. Perhaps that is what inspired the old Jewish saying, “God could not be everywhere at once, so he gave each child a mother.”
When a child cries at night, it is usually the mother who will be at his or her bedside first. She feels her child’s pain, instinctively, and she will bear it not only as a burden, but also as a privilege and a joy.
A mother’s sensitivity and love is boundless. She will continue to keep her children on her heart long after others have given up on them. Like St. Augustine’s mother Monica, who refused to disown him during his years of youthful rebellion, she will continue to have hope for a prodigal son (or daughter) even when everyone else has condemned him. Moreover, she will believe for him when he has ceased to believe.
I cannot thank God enough for the love of my mother and for her deep relationship with my father. Even though they were sparing in their use of religious language (they never talked about their piety), it was obvious to us seven children that they loved God, one another, and each of us. And while it was clear that our father was head of the family, he never tolerated the slightest disrespect from us towards our mother.
Many women in our time rebel against motherhood. They forget that it is not only a God-given task, but a God-given privilege as well. Motherhood was once regarded as the noblest calling of a woman; nowadays, it is pushed aside by more “desirable” careers and seen as an inconvenience or even an embarrassment. It is true that many women rebel because of the oppression and lovelessness of the men around them, but in the end their resentment, understandable as it may be, achieves little. How different family life could be if we admitted to our confusion about the role of man and of woman; if we sought to rediscover God’s plan for both, and regarded one another with respect and love!
In our community, mothers participate in the daily work as fully as possible—as cooks and nurses, doctors and seamstresses, accountants, teachers, graphic designers, and secretaries. Yet when pregnancy requires it, their first priority is always motherhood. Far from regretting or resenting it, they feel, as all of us do, that it is a gift; that in God’s eyes, there is no sacrifice more worthy than that made for the sake of a child.

While countries around the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, several countries, including the United States, Italy, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Turkey celebrate it on the second Sunday of May.
In the United States, the origins of the official holiday go back to 1870, when Julia Ward Howe—an abolitionist best remembered as the poet who wrote “Battle Hymn of the Republic”—worked to establish a Mother’s Peace Day. Howe dedicated the celebration to the eradication of war, and organized festivities in Boston for years.
In 1907, Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, began the campaign to have Mother’s Day officially recognized, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson did this, proclaiming it a national holiday and a “public expression of our love and reverence for all mothers.”
Today’s commercialized celebration of candy, flowers, gift certificates, and lavish meals at restaurants bears little resemblance to Howe’s original idea. There is nothing wrong with that. But here, for the record’s sake, is the proclamation she wrote in 1870, which explains, in her own impassioned words, the goals of the original holiday.
Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: “We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.
“Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”
From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, “Disarm, disarm! The sword is not the balance of justice.” Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each learning after his own time, the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God.
In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

This Mother’s Day, Give the Gift of Peace

One of the most commercialized holidays of the year in the United States, second only to Christmas, is Mother’s Day. We need to return to its original focus – that of promoting world peace. My mother does not want flowers, cards, phone calls, elegant dinners, or any of the other usual trappings of modern Mother’s Day. Not that any of these are objectionable, but what means the most to her is knowing that her life’s work of raising me and my siblings has contributed to the increase of peace in the world. Every day in our family is a celebration of Mother’s Day: Without Mom, none of us would have been born, none of us would have been raised to be persons of heart, persons of peace. For years Mom was an active member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. I have a happy childhood memory of helping her paint large sheets of pegboard for a WILPF display booth at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. We don’t just owe our lives to Mom; we owe her our view of the world as one great big family, where each of us has global responsibilities to work for peace and justice.
An early commemoration of Mother’s Day grew out of the pain and heartbreak of the Civil War. Mothers on both sides of this American conflict had lost sons—sons that they had carried for nine months, given birth to in pain, raised with great care and love, only to have them slaughtered on the battlefields. Julia Ward Howe, writer of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” became so distressed by the bloody battles of the Civil War that she called on mothers to band together to protest the senselessness of their sons killing each other. Her “Mother’s Day Proclamation” of 1870 called for an international Mother’s Day promoting peace and motherhood:
Arise, then, women of this day!
Arise all women who have hearts…
Let them then solemnly take counsel
With each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace…
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality
