Synopsis

It is ironical that Champagne is among the least understood types of wines despite the fact it is the probably the most famous and certainly one of the most popular wines in the world throughout history. Things get even vaguer when one exits the city limits of Champagne to explore the many fine Sparkling wines elsewhere in France, Italy and Spain. In fact, sparklers are produced practically everywhere that dry wine is produced, from California to Chile, Argentina to Australia, Germany to India.

This event starts off with a 45-minute review on various aspects of sparkling wine, including how it is produced, the different styles that many of us are likely to encounter and other topics that will help us to appreciate sparkling wine.

Income of Pampanga government increases

City of San Fernando, Pampanga — The provincial government of Pampanga’s dependence on its Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) for its yearly operation has dropped by 20 percent.
This was disclosed over the weekend by Pampanga 1st District Board Member Crisostomo Garbo, chairman of the committee on ways and means and also on appropriations of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP), adding the reduction is quite significant at 60 percent. “From 80 percent dependency rate of the past administrations, we are now less dependent at 60 percent. It is an achievement,” said Garbo.
“The drop could be greatly attributed to the income generating efforts spearheaded by the provincial government,” he added.
As he cited the present administration under Pampanga Governor Lilia G. Pineda for its collective efforts in coming up with effective measures and strategies to increase the income of the province.
Since Pineda’s assumption to office in 2010, Garbo said the province’s budget continue to soar from P1.1 billion to P1.4 billion in 2011, to P1.7 billion at present. He said majority of the income of the province comes from the quarry operations where in the collection of the provincial government environment and natural resources office (PG-ENRO) reached P842 million for the first term of the current administration – the highest so far in the history of the quarry industry.
There is also an increase in the Real Property Tax (RPT) collection following the implementation of the integrated taxation management system (I-TAX) on some of the towns in the province, said Garbo.
The provincial government targets P500 million yearly RPT collections once the I-Tax is fully implemented in all the municipalities and cities, according to Garbo.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, July 29 (PIA) — Some 200 student leaders coming from the provinces of Central Luzon recently took part in the 9th Religare Leadership Congress, which was held at the University of the Assumption (UA).

In his keynote message, City of San Fernando Mayor Edwin Santiago told participants to practice servant leadership and aim for transformation.

“Leaders press transformation by changing the culture and that takes a lot of courage,” said the first termer local chief executive.

Santiago likewise reminded attendees to “establish a good foundation, have strong faith and be active citizens of the society.”

Anchored on the theme “Breaking Stereotype Leadership, Embracing Dynamism and Equipping the Youth with Global Competencies and Christian Values”, the three-day gathering featured seminars on social responsibility, and youth and Christian leadership as well as teambuilding sessions.

“Religare” which means “to bind” in Latin was done in partnership with De La Salle University.

Apart from UA, other participating schools were Tarlac State University, Immaculate Conception of Olongapo City, Mary the Queen College of Guagua, St. Nicholas College of Business and Technology and the City College of San Fernando.

“We are all one in transforming leaders into visionary leaders. We don’t want to confine leadership academically, [but] rather holistically,” said UA Student Affairs Director Precious Bernadette Estrada.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, July 29 (PIA) — Lectures on Establishing an Entrepreneurial Mindset, Financing, On-line Marketing, Intellectual Property, and Marketing Trends to Hit 2014 will highlight the opening of the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Roving Academy in Pampanga on July 30, a Tuesday.

“SME Roving Academy is a continuous breeding ground for start-up enterprises and an institutionalized provision of business development services to the identified enterprises which will make them competitive in the domestic and export markets,” said DTI Provincial Director Elenita Ordonio.

The program will serve as a forum to discuss the problems encountered by SMEs at the provincial level such as lack of access to financial assistance and access to market.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Philippine Embassy in Washington DC said it will give assistance to the family of a slain kabalen nurse in Cordova, Tennessee, even as it vowed to coordinate with the Memphis police in connection with the case.
The Philippine Embassy through Ambassador Jose Cuisia, Jr. condemned what he described as “the senseless killing of a Filipino nurse.”
“The Philippine Embassy has been informed of the death of Erano Santos, a 33-year-old Filipino nurse from Angeles City, outside his apartment in Memphis on 20th of July 2013,” Cuisia said in a statement.
“We grieve with Mr. Santos’s loved ones and join them in condemning this senseless killing.

Santos was found dead near Stonebridge Crossing Apartments in Cordova, Tennessee last Saturday afternoon (Sunday, Philippine time) by Memphis police. Santos sustained a gunshot wound that had caused his death.
Santos was a former Clinical Instructor at Holy Angel University’s College of Nursing. The victim’s Facebook page also lists Philippine International Hospital as among his previous employers. Memphis police, in a report, said they are searching for the vehicle taken from a murder scene in Cordova Saturday afternoon. Santos’ relatives and friends are now processing the return of his remains here.
Thirty-three-year-old Santos moved to the United States early last year to fulfill his dreams and work as nurse; he died before completing a full year.

City boosts ‘Zero Waste’ campaign

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The City Government of San Fernando is boosting its “Zero-Waste” campaign with the distribution of some 150 pedal-powered garbage collection carts in its 35 barangays.
Mayor Edwin Santiago said over the weekend that the waste collection carts will complement the city’s garbage trucks and its existing materials recovery facilities in villages and private subdivisions.
“We are very serious in achieving our Zero Waste Campaign that is why we are giving all of our barangays this bicycle garbage collection carts that come complete with trash bins for segregation. This is also environment-friendly as there is no emission or pollutant because it is not fuel-powered,” the mayor said.
Santiago told Sun.Star Pampanga that the city is compliant to the Solid Waste Management Act, and is heeding the call of Gov. Lilia Pineda to all local government units to help Capitol solve Pampanga’s garbage woes.
“We are very compliant to the Solid Waste Management Act. In fact, what we have now in our transfer station in Barangay Lara are residuals we haul to Kalangitan in Tarlac. Recyclables are being put to good use and biodegradable waste turned into organic fertilizer,” he added.
The mayor also said that barangay officials, city hall employees and Fernandinos continue to undergo seminars and training in solid waste management.
“This is a priority and is an integral part of our ‘Tsinelas ni EdSa’ advocacy,” concluded Santiago.

Charity rugby tourney set in Clark

CLARK FREEPORT–An international rugby tournament for a cause is set to open here in September.
The 10th International Invitational Fat Boy Tens Rugby Tournament will open at the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Challenger Field on September 7, 2013.
During the international tournament, some 350 players and accompanying persons from 16 foreign and local teams will compete for charitable causes.
Ronaldo Tiotuico, chief of the Department of Tourism in Central Luzon (DOT 3), said the players, some of them from Hong Kong, are scheduled to mount their Charity Golf Tournament on September 6 at the Mimosa Golf and Country Club.
Tiotuico said the annual event was initiated by the Pot Bellied Pigs of Hong Kong. He said the event is meant to generate some P6 million in donations from well-meaning international company sponsors and charity auctions in order to help assuage the plight of disadvantaged children in Angeles City including the development of the game of rugby in the Philippines while at the same time contribute towards the generation of more visitor arrivals into the country.
During the last three years of gaming, the Pot Bellied Pigs headed by its president, Alun Grassick from Scotland, assisted by Ross Bendix, was able to raise an amount of more than US$50,000 each year for their charitable causes.
Among their beneficiaries include Clark Rugby Club, Philippine Rugby Football Union Development Fund and the Visayas Rugby Football Union.
They also support medical projects like providing medicines and vaccinations for hundreds of children across the country.
The group is continuously soliciting contributions from companies that support the development of the rugby game.
Proceeds go to events like engaging students from various schools in Luzon and Visayas in training clinics – either touch rugby or full contact.
Feeding programs are also held in each clinic. They also sponsor children’s education in Thailand and have sponsored yurts in Mongolia for the Christina Nobel Foundation.
A portion of the proceeds from all-kit sales goes to the club’s designated charities.
DOT-sponsored prize packages such as roundtrip air tickets to Boracay or Davao including “More Fun” eco-bags will be up for grabs during the club’s charity auction.

Tapang to forge unity, sets plans for PCL leadership

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Pampanga Councilors League (PCL) president Mike Tapang said he will now work for programs that will help fellow councilors, setting to forge better unity among them and bringing in development works for the province.
Tapang, to sit as ex-officio member of the Pampanga Provincial Board, said his term for the PCL will be marked by better coordination and will address the needs of fellow councilors in the different towns of the province.
PCL serves as the official voice of the town councilors in different parts of Pampanga and serves the common interest of councilors with regards to legislative and other political matters.
Tapang had earlier assured his fellow town and city councilors that he will serve as “the voice and conduit” of Pampanga legislators in the Provincial Board.
Also part of Team Tapang’s platform is to construct a website for PCL where anybody can access and view legislators’ activities and legislation and other topics concerning the league.
Tapang said that he will also bring into the Pampanga Provincial Board the concerns of his fellow town legislators.
