Ex-mayor to file motion on graft case
March 5, 2011
MASANTOL — A former town mayor who was convicted for violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act has prepared a motion for reconsideration on her case.
“I have done no wrong. I have just performed my duty as a mayor for the sake of my constituents. Many were saddened with what happened,” former mayor Corazon Mallari-Lacap said.
Lacap, who expressed disappointment with the recent ruling of the Sandigandbayan, said she will exhaust all legal remedies available in the graft court, and if necessary, to the Supreme Court.
The former mayor was earlier penalized by the court with an indeterminate penalty of six years to 10 years, with perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
The controversy stemmed from the refusal of Lacap to issue a business permit to certain Fermina Santos during her stint as mayor in 1999 and 2000.
Santos is the owner of Ferman variety store, engaged in the sale of school supplies, furniture and accessories since 1975.
“Masyadong mabigat ang naging hatol sa magaan na kaso na isinampa laban sa akin,” Mallari-Lacap said.
She also said that even before she assumed office in June 1998, the store in question was already closed.
“In fact, [I] wrote a letter addressed to the owner requesting for a dialogue to settle requirements on business registration,” she said, adding the owner refused to receive the letter. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
