Candaba town declared as birds’ sanctuary

December 22, 2010

CANDABA, Pampanga,(PNA) — The Sangguniang Bayan here has recently approved an ordinance declaring the entire municipality of Candaba, including its wetlands and waterways as bird and wild fish sanctuary.

The declaration aims to further bolster the municipalityโ€™s program of harnessing and developing its eco- tourism potential.

The ordinance was passed in support to the existing Republic Act No. 9147, otherwise known as โ€œthe โ€œWildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Actโ€ and the Wildlife Law Enforcement Manual of Operations and related Memorandum Circulars of the Department of Environment and natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Agriculture (DA)

Candaba swamps are very fertile due to its sustained deposits of humus and decaying vegetable residues.

Migrant wild ducks and various bird wildlife escape winter winds from China and Siberia making Candaba their yearly sanctuary.

Hunting birds in the swamp are a tourist attraction.

It can be recalled that on October 17, 2003, the Sangguniang Bayan of Candaba also passed a resolution declaring Candaba as a Fresh Water Aquaculture Resource and Fish Sanctuary Zone for the purpose of protecting and preserving its flora and fauna;

The Sangguniang Bayan likewise passed a subsequent resolution declaring the Candaba Swamp as bird sanctuary on September 27, 2004.

This town is now popularly known as the โ€œHome of Migratory Birds.โ€

It has also become a leading advocate of environmental and wildlife protection. (PNA)
