CSF gov’t: We will set Guinness record

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The city government here is optimistic that it will set a new record in Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of participants during a city-wide clean-up drive, numbering 200,000.
During the press conference for Kaganapan 2013 held at the Heroes Hall yesterday, Angelo David, chair of the citywide clean-up, said they are gathering 200,000 participants from different sectors to beat the existing record of 165,000.
David said it is very important for the city to get the title in the Guinness Book of World records, especially to Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, who will be leaving the legacy of “making the City of San Fernando a habitat for human excellence.”
“Getting the title is a very important to Mayor Oca, as he is finishing his term this June,” he stressed.
He added that the massive campaign on the clean-up drive aims to educate the people on the advantages of cleanliness not only in the community but also in the entire city.
This city’s massive and simultaneous citywide clean-up drive will start on February 1 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The projected biggest clean-up drive ever will involve an estimated 200,000 participants and volunteers from schools, city hall, the private sector, Philippine Army, Philippine National Police, barangays, non-government organizations, common folk, and government agencies like the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources, Public Works and Highways, Agriculture, Budget and Management, Education, Health, Social Welfare and Development, Tourism and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
City Environment and Natural Resources Office head Regina Rodriguez said the drive will be held along the MacArthur Highway from Barangay Telabastagan to Barangay San Nicolas.
The drive will involve the cleaning of barangays, schools, roadsides and in particular waterways and canals snaking from the north, passing through Barangay Saguin and Magliman down to the San Fernando River in Barangay San Juan.
Eastward, the clean-up will take on the inner waterways that cascade via the Del Carmen Creek and will also cover small rivers in inner city barangays like Lourdes, Del Pilar and Sta. Teresita.
Mother Earth Foundation, an international environment group, will take the lead in coordinating with Guinness on the project, which is a part of the San Fernando’s “Kaganapan 2013” or cityhood anniversary.
“It all sounds ambitious and difficult to work on. But we have to start somewhere and take the first step in protecting the environment with this biggest clean-up drive,” Froilan Grate of Mother Earth Foundation said.
