Corona won’t force prosecutors to apologize

IF HE only had his way, Chief Justice Renato Corona said prosecutors who accused him of owning 45 properties that later turned out to be incorrect should apologize in public.
“Much as we want to get an apology, we cannot force this to the prosecutors. Saying sorry for a harm done is a personal decision,” Corona said.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada earlier asked the need to issue a public correction for the defective list, which was testified in court by Land Registration Authority (LRA) Administrator Eulalio Diaz on Wednesday.
He advised lead prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. to rectify the error and take back what they said in the media that indeed, the properties of Corona are not 45. The prosecution said Corona owns 21 assets instead.
“If they made the correction in a press conference, the correction should also be made in a press conference,” Senator Loren Legarda said, adding reputations should not be diminished due to incompetence, flaws, or computer error.
Diaz admitted that the list was a product of a general search in the agency’s database, where it is possible that not all properties are actually registered in Corona’s name.
Of the 45 properties, defense lawyer Noel Lazaro said 17 were already cancelled, including the seven parcels of land in Marikina City sold to Corona’s second cousin Demetrio Vicente, the McKinley property, and a lot in La Vista, among others.
Lazaro also said that another 12 titles were not even registered to Corona and his wife Cristina.
Overall, the defense team pointed out that Corona only had five properties, which were reflected in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
