P7 million still needed for Sinulog
Friday, January 6, 2012
CEBU CITY — Citing the effects of the recession and calamities that struck parts of the country recently, several companies have backed out from sponsoring the Sinulog activities this year.
Sinulog 2012 will cost organizers P40 million to stage and as of Thursday, the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) still has to raise P7 million for the nightly activities and the grand parade on January 15.
SFI executive director Ricky Ballesteros said among the companies that will not be giving them cash sponsorship is an electronics company, which used to give them P1 million every year.
“Among the reasons they cited why they backed out from sponsoring this year’s Sinulog is the recession. Other companies opted to help the victims of typhoon Sendong,” Ballesteros said.
Ballesteros is optimistic, though, that they can raise the amount needed because in past Sinulog celebrations, sponsors committed at the last minute.
In an interview Thursday, he said they will look for other sponsors so they can raise the P40 million needed to stage all the programs lined up for this year’s Sinulog.
Among the activities organized by SFI are the nightly concerts and cultural shows at Fuente Osmeña, the Sinulog Festival Queen pageant, the Sinulog Idol and the Sinulog Best Dance Crew competition.
It is also spending P500,000 for “See Cebu in a Carousel,” which features Cebu’s historical sites and tourist attractions printed on 15-foot tarpaulins. These will be installed along the 5.3-kilometer parade route.
SFI will also provide the meals of the volunteers who will handle the crowd control and security during the parade, and for the dancers who will join the grand finale number.
The Cebu City Government has pledged to shoulder the cash prizes amounting to P18 million, which it will give directly to the winning contingents.
It will also foot the P2.5-million bill for the staging of the 30-minute production number for the grand finale at the Cebu City Sports Center after the street dancing.
The other P20 million will have to be raised by SFI.
Ballesteros said they have so far raised P13 million, with some P8 million coming from companies that are sponsoring the event.
Last Wednesday, Governor Gwen Garcia also approved the P3-million financial assistance of the Province to the SFI.
The organizers expect to raise another P2 million from ticket sales.
As early as last week, the 600 white tickets the SFI printed, which are the most expensive seats at P700 each, have been sold out.
The pink and green tickets, worth P500 each, and the yellow tickets worth P600 are still available.
SFI printed 1,600 pink tickets, 1,600 green tickets and 2,100 yellow tickets.
Meanwhile, the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) will reroute traffic Friday for the Sinulog 2012 launching parade.
In their traffic advisory, Citom said vehicular traffic on Osmeña Blvd. will be rerouted, starting from the main entrance of the Basilica del Sto. Niño to the Cebu City Central School, Abellana National High School, the Cebu City Sports Complex and up to the Fuente-Osmeña rotunda.
Downtown-bound jeepneys coming from Capitol and Lahug will have to turn right to B. Rodriguez St., take a left turn to V. Rama Ave. and to V. Rama Ext. to reach their destination.
Jeepneys from from Banawa and Guadalupe shall take V. Rama Ave., turn right to Katipunan St., then to A. Lopez St., to Tres de Abril St., to Carlock St., to Tupas St., to Magallanes St. then to Carbon area.
Jeepneys coming from Lahug passing through Gen. Maxilom Ave. shall turn left to F. Ramos St. and go straight to Junquera St. before turning left to Colon St. and to D. Jakosalem St., then to their point of origin.
Jeepneys coming from Inayawan, Basak Pardo and Labangon passing through Colon St., shall turn right to Leon Kilat St., then to Magallanes St., then back to their point of origin.
Other jeepney routes that have been rerouted by Citom include those coming from Capitol and Ayala (14D), as well as those coming from Talamban, Urgello and USC Girls High, and the jeepneys from Mabolo and Mandaue City that pass through V. Gullas St.
“Motorists, drivers and other road users are advised to follow the traffic signs installed on the re-routing areas,” Citom said in a statement. (PDF of Sun.Star Cebu)
