Town church set to become national cultural treasure

MINALIN – Enshrining the historic and one-of-a kind Sta. Monica Church in Minalin will definitely spark tourism and open up hundreds of opportunities for faithful and peace-loving Minalineños, Mayor Arturo “Katoy” Naguit said.
“Definitely, it will be the start of something big for Minalin. That is why we worked so hard to have Sta. Monica Church become a national cultural treasure (NCT). It’s about time. And we have transcended boundaries between the separation of the Church and the State, so we could work harmoniously for the people of Minalin. It’s the next big thing that will happen to us,” Naguit said
The town is known as the egg basket of the country, producing some 1.5 million eggs per day from its poultries and around 30 to 40 tons per day of aquaculture produce.
“This is what we want to harness. Being known as the center of faith in this side of the province, we would like tourists and people to know that there is more to Minalin than just eggs and tilapia [St. Peter’s Fish]. We are looking at several packages like the true wetland cruise, recreation and promotion of our produce,” he said.
Naguit said they are planning to link up with Bacolor on their San Guillermo Church and also Betis with their furniture and churches, and that they would end up in Minalin with thier very own wetland cruise, floating restaurants and villas.
“All these will be manned by out-of-school-youth for their employment. We are looking at end of the year or latest next year for the project. Definitely, Sta. Monica Church as an NCT will be the start of it all,” he added.
The Sta. Monica Church is set to be installed as an NCT this Saturday, with national and local government officials expected to grace the affair. (Jovi T. De Leon)
