Napa vintners wait … and wait … for harvest-11August26
Late and light is the prediction for harvest 2011 in the Napa Valley.
The kids are back in school, September just around the corner, but the harvest has yet to begin.
Nonetheless, members of Napa Valley Vintners were upbeat when they gathered Tuesday afternoon for their annual harvest kick-off, held this year at Napa’s Riverfront Plaza.
The vintner band Wristrocket provided music as vintners shared thoughts about the upcoming harvest. “What we’re celebrating is the hope of a harvest,” quipped vintner Garen Staglin.
Even sparkling wine grapes, the first to be harvested, are still on the vine, said Hugh Davies, president of Schramsberg Vineyards, one of the valley’s major sparkling wine producers.
In a typical year, the harvest for sparkling wine varietals is under way by Aug. 14, Davies said. But this year, as last, grape ripening has been slowed by the mild summer weather. They began harvesting sparkling wine grapes Aug. 27 last year, he said.
“We checked the Brix today,” he said, referring to the sugar levels in grapes that indicate when they’re ready to be picked. “It was up. But it might be down again tomorrow.”
Davies said they were hoping to begin to bring in Carneros pinot noir on Monday. Mumm Napa Valley, another sparkling wine producer, is also expecting to begin harvest Monday.
The burst of heat on Tuesday, with temperatures shooting into the 90s, was generally considered a hopeful sign.
“We’ve seen a lot of change just this week,” said Paula Kornell, general manager of Oakville Ranch Vineyards. “Last week, there was no color in the grapes, this week there it is.”
Kornell added that yield is anticipated to be down this year, with some estimates saying it might be as much as a third less than usual.
“We lost a lot to shatter this year,” she said, referring to the loss of grapes that can occur in wet spring conditions.
“But what’s out there looks great,” said Joan Boyd of Oakville’s Boyd Family Vineyards. “This is farming, after all.”
Estimating this year’s crush will be at least two weeks “behind normal maturity,” vintner Michael Mondavi admitted that he loves late harvests. “The longer the grapes hang on the vine the more the flavor develops and the better the vintage.”
Mondavi noted the lingering spring rains this year “helped bring up the aquifer. The valley looks great – hillside vineyards are better than I’ve ever seen them.
“Mother Nature is the boss for the next eight weeks – we have to respond to her leadership. We’re winegrowers … she makes the wine,” he said.
Mondavi said the overall crop in the valley will be lighter than average. “But I’ll take less quantity and better quality any time.”
Another well known Napa Valley vintner, Mike Martini, said an inspection of the Louis M. Martini “specialty vineyards” revealed the cabernet sauvignon crop might be down by as much as 40 percent – “and yet the crop is still late … veraison (grapes taking on color) is about two weeks behind. We won’t have to do any thinning (of the clusters).
“That’s Napa,” Martini said. “Over at our Monte Rosso Vineyard (near Sonoma), the crop is up about 30 percent. But overall, the harvest of coastal fruit (up and down the state) will probably be down by 15 to 20 percent this year.”
PureCru Napa Valley winemaker Mitch Cosentino said the 2011 crush in Pope Valley will be “a little late even by last year’s example.”
“Some people say sauvignon blanc will be down by as much as 40 percent on valley floor. But in Pope Valley, we won’t be down by more than 10 percent,” he said.
“What harvest?” quipped grower/winemaker Jay Buoncristiani. “The yields will be down – we’re about three weeks behind a normal year.
“Today, the weather is good … we can only hope for cool mornings and hot afternoons through Halloween. Mild weather is a good thing – it lets everything catch up. These are the years that I like.”
This year is the first time the Napa Valley Vintners, a 400-plus member trade organization, chose Napa for its harvest kickoff. Napa Mayor Jill Techel, who had proclaimed Tuesday “Napa Valley Vintners in the City of Napa,” was on hand to welcome the group.
“We’re really excited that they came to Napa this year,” Techel said. “And I heard there are a lot reservations at Napa restaurants tonight. We’re excited to show off what we have here.”
