Guv leads launch of P5-M social pension for seniors
By Ian Ocampo Flora
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda led Wednesday the distribution of P5 million worth of assistance to almost 900 senior citizens of the province.
The distribution was part of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Social Pension Program. It was held at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center here on Tuesday.
Pineda was assisted by DSWD Regional Director Adelina Apostol and board members of the province.
Pineda said the program, which is being supported by President Benigno Aquino III, is a great help to senior citizens who have a lot of concerns in terms of health and other social services but are not fully met because of meager resources.
The social pension will greatly help in meeting some of the needs of the senior citizens, she said.
Pineda said the beneficiaries were identified through the National Household Targeting System for Poverty-Reduction.
Republic Act 9994, or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act, provides additional benefits to indigent senior citizens under the Social Pension Program for Indigent Senior Citizens, in line with government’s obligation to protect vulnerable sectors.
The program here will grant P500 pensions to qualified elderly beneficiaries aged 77 and above, released in quarterly basis.
Apostol said the program aims to provide financial assistance to senior citizens of the country. In Pampanga, the beneficiaries were selected from all four districts here.
Apostol said qualified to avail of this program are senior citizens aged 77 and above. Priority, however, will be given to elders aging 80 years old and above who are frail, sickly, or with disability, and without pension or regular source of income, compensation or financial assistance from their relatives to support their basic needs, as determined by the DSWD.
Pineda said her administration will also focus on strengthening the implementation of Republic Act 9994, adding seniors must also be vigilant in demanding for their 20 percent discount in availing many services in restaurants, pharmacies, hotels among others.
The event also featured the granting of a P3.9-million assistance fund to the selected residents of San Juan BaΓ±o’s Neighborhood Association and Shelter Assistance through the DSWD’s core shelter assistance program.
