THE Department of Education (DepEd) in Davao is still announcing the need for volunteer teachers for kindergarten three days before classes open.
Should there be no volunteers, then the Grade One teachers, who are already manning full classrooms, will have to pitch in as kindergarten teachers, said the agency.

It was reported Wednesday that in Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. Central Elementary School (KTMSCES) alone, 300 kindergarten children were enrolled when the school only has one regular kindergarten teacher in its plantilla.
Way angay nga kabalak-an ang mga eskwelahan nga daghan og enrollees sa kindergarten tungod kay naay mga pamaagi niini ang Department of Education (DepEd has a solution to this so they need not worry),” DepEd Davao spokesperson Genielito Atillo said.
He said they will implement the regular volunteer program and kindergarten volunteer program, and utilize grade one teachers to teach kindergarten students.
The regular volunteer program will utilize regular teachers to teach kindergaten. A volunteer program will also be introduced on the community level where education graduates are invited to apply with the school principal.
Should there be no volunteers, then Grade One teachers will be used to man the kindergarten classes.
Atillo said the volunteer teachers will receive honorarium from DepEd.
“The volunteers who will teach one section with 30 kindergarten students will receive P3,000, while the volunteers in a section with 10 students will receive P1,500,” Atillo said.
The official said anyone who wishes to apply as kindergarten volunteer teacher must simply approach the school principal.
He added that volunteers must have completed a four-year education course in college and a resident of the community.
The increase in the number of enrollees in kindergarten is a good sign that parents are responding to the campaign of DepEd, he added.
The department is seeking to institutionalize kindergarten classes in all public schools, Atillo said.
The kindergarten class in public schools is part of the K+12 education program of DepEd.
K represents kindergarten, while 12 represents the number of years a student stays in the elementary and high school.
Kindergarten students who enrolled for school year 2011-2012 are included in the K+12 education program. First year high school students will also be included in the program and they will finish secondary education by 2016, Atillo said.
Parents who enrolled their children at the KTMSCS were worried after news broke out that there is only one teacher qualified to teach a total of 300 students.
Dr. Leonesa Mariaca, guidance counselor and officer-in-charge of KTMSCES, earlier expressed concern with the high number of enrollees and only one teacher.
Mariaca said the number could have reached 1,000 if they did not stop the registration.
